Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I thank the witnesses for their contribution and Deputy O'Callaghan for the legislation. While it is welcome, it has limitations with regard to who can access the advice and when it will be made available. I am not sure about the mechanics of how it would work, particularly prior to charges being brought. It would be interesting and worthwhile to work it out and go through it. An...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: Everything I wanted to raise has been asked. Will the witnesses elaborate on how this could work? Who would be the best person to give advice prior to charges being brought? How would it be accessed? At what stage would it be accessed? I imagine it would probably have to be a rape crisis centre. Charges might never be brought. How would that work? Have the witnesses thought about it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I imagine it is a difficult time for a victim to decide to report. The act of reporting itself is significant. Would a person be asked to report twice? Doing it once is very difficult.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: One has to take into account that a person has to explain this stuff to someone who is very traumatised.

[46785/19]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Nov 2019)

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: The Minister's response is interesting. I take it from what he has said that he wants to introduce a more realistic view of the carbon tax and that he does not believe the actual carbon tax is realistic, which is a very interesting Government statement. The reality is that €400 million of carbon tax revenue is not used for climate actions. Only €90 million of carbon tax...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Climate Change Policy (14 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: There is no doubt that the transition will be very difficult for them, but it will also be difficult for citizens throughout the country. By increasing the PSO levy the Minister is targeting the most vulnerable citizens who must pay the levy. We have a carbon tax that is supposed to meet those requirements. There is no doubt that there is a need to fund the cost of the changeover for Bord...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (14 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: We are expanding our interests.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (14 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: We have to look and see what other parts of the country are doing as well to see whether they are keeping up to speed with us. SK biotek Ireland, based in Swords, County Dublin, has laid off approximately 150 staff. This is a serious situation. Only a year ago the company made an agreement that it would guarantee the terms and conditions of the staff for five years and yet here it is...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (14 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I thank the Minister of State for his response and appreciate that the Minister, Deputy Humphreys, cannot be present, which is fair enough. However, it is vital that the Government take a proactive role in dealing with this dispute. None of us wants to see the jobs lost or workers out on strike. However, the company has taken a very negative position, of which we have proof. It appears...

Personal Assistance Service: Motion (19 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I move: That Dáil Éireann: notes that: — in March 2018, Ireland formally ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which under Article 19 states that disabled people have the right to live in the community and have access to a range of in-home and other supports, including personal assistance to support this; —...

Personal Assistance Service: Motion (19 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I welcome the Government's announcement that it will support motion. It would be a travesty if it opposed it. We will measure its welcome and support of the motion by what it does to deliver on it. That is what is vitally important. The purpose of the motion is to deliver for people with disabilities so that they can live life to the fullest of their abilities. That is vitally important....

[47439/19]
