Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I have some figures to hand, and while I am not sure whether they are correct, our guests might comment on them. They relate to injuries and deaths at Shelbourne Park. In 2019, there were 21 injuries and four deaths; in 2018, 41 injuries and 12 deaths; and in 2017, 21 injuries and ten deaths. To me, who does not know a pile about the matter, that seems extraordinarily high. Are the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I may be mistaken but I do not believe there is the same number of deaths in horse racing, even though there are a large number of meetings and so on. I find the figures worrying.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: It was mentioned that the number of deaths is declining but in both 2015 and 2016, there were seven deaths, whereas in 2017, there were ten and in 2018, there were 12. It seems to be increasing rather than declining. While it seems to be going a bit more slowly this year, the year is not yet finished. I do not know much about it but it seems extraordinary that so many dogs have died at...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: It is obviously not being achieved if 100 deaths a year is normal. In regard to Horse Racing Ireland, would it be one or two horses?

Provision of Accommodation and Ancillary Services to Applicants for International Protection: Statements (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I support the comments made by Deputy Connolly at the end of her contribution The commitment in many communities in Ireland to welcoming refugees was honoured last month when Ireland won an award from the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative for the community sponsorship Ireland programme. This pilot scheme follows the Canadian example, which has resettled more than 300,000 refugees over...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Supporting a Just Transition: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I thank everybody for their contributions. By way of background, the Department has provided lots of detail on what appears to be many successful employment initiatives and start-ups in the midlands. It is sobering to recall that the unemployment rate in 2015 was 14.9%, whereas it now stands at 6.6%. I know from my constituency in Donegal that one of the main factors in the reduction in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Supporting a Just Transition: Discussion (13 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I am glad it is not data centres. EirGrid estimates that the demand from data centres could account for up to 36% of Ireland's electricity demand by 2030 and 75% of new electricity demand growth. How are big data opportunities compatible with a low carbon economy? Does the SEAI have examples of sustainable energy community projects that are located in the midlands? What lessons can be...
