Paddy Burke: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Haiti Disaster: Motion (Resumed) (27 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I thank Senator O'Toole for sharing his time with me. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Peter Power, and congratulate him on the work he is doing. An unbelievable disaster has taken place in Haiti. The Minister of State has outlined how the Government and his Department, in particular, have drawn many lessons from the tsunami in 2004. It is great that we have learned from the past...
- Seanad: Haiti Disaster: Motion (Resumed) (27 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: When is it proposed to sit again?
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I ask for a debate on regional planning guidelines as soon as possible. In most regional authorities the regional planning guidelines are on public display. We have seen the flooding fiasco in recent months due to poor planning. This is a golden opportunity for the Seanad to debate something relevant to local authority members and Senators. I ask for this debate because in most cases the...
- Seanad: Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010: Second Stage (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister to the House and I wish him well with this Bill. It is very important and some credit for this should go to Shell to Sea and to the Rossport five. They have probably highlighted the safety issues and they have generated the debate. However, credit is also due to the Minister for bringing forward this Bill. I was a member of Mayo County Council when the gas issue...

Paddy Burke: I am 50 miles away from there.
- Seanad: Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010: Second Stage (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: Mayo might be a Fine Gael stronghold now but it certainly was not at that time. This project was never hijacked by any of the main political parties. They never brought politics into it during this dispute. We were delighted the gas find was coming through the county because it carried many benefits from a rates point of view. The pipeline was going 100 miles from north Mayo to the Galway...
- Seanad: Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Bill 2010: Second Stage (28 Jan 2010)
Paddy Burke: The Minister has acknowledged this and has a pilot scheme in this area. The Minister should be complimented on this. The foreshore licence issue is a major issue and must be addressed. I support Senator O'Malley in this regard. I welcome this important legislation and I wish the Minister well. As Senator Donohoe said, Fine Gael will be fully supportive of the Bill.
- Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State. I also welcome the opportunity to contribute to the debate on the Bill. Like Senator Bradford, I hope the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government will not shut down rural sporting organisations and perhaps the Minister of State might provide a commitment in that regard when replying to Second Stage. Some years ago, we used to look at...

Paddy Burke: Senator Leyden without interruption please.

Paddy Burke: You will not have time to go around the country.

Paddy Burke: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Head Shops: Statements (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Head Shops: Statements (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: I thank Senator O'Toole for sharing his time with me. In the limited time available I wish to ask the Minister of State one or two questions. This is a fascinating debate but we more we discuss it the bigger the issue seems to be. We are now talking about planning issues, the misuse of substances legislation, the Food Safety Authority, the HSE and the Department of Justice, Equality and...
- Seanad: Head Shops: Statements (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: Can one sell them beside other products? I would be in the courts if I were to do so; therefore, we should close head shops down immediately. The food industry, including restaurants, operates under strict regulations. We must check food storage temperatures four or fives time a day. One cannot serve breakfast without taking the temperature of a rasher first. One cannot wash potatoes...
- Seanad: Water and Sewerage Schemes (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: A question, Senator.
- Seanad: Water and Sewerage Schemes (3 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: Has the Senator a question?
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (4 Feb 2010)
Paddy Burke: I have received notice from Senator Maria Corrigan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, she proposes to raise the following matter: The need for the Minister for Health and Children to report on the opportunity for a national campaign to be undertaken to identify the whereabouts of the hundreds of children missing from the care of the HSE in recent years and to indicate...
