- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (31 Mar 2022)
Eugene Murphy: Everybody is striving to use less herbicides. Although, we have to be careful in this context because local authorities now have a problems in many counties with plants such as Japanese knotweed. Action has to be taken to get rid of that. I am happy with the response and with what has been proposed in response to the suggestion from that gentleman.

Eugene Murphy: May I make a brief comment?

Eugene Murphy: Thank you, Chair.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (31 Mar 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I wish to pay tribute to Mr. Bollins who is an extraordinary official and a most helpful individual. We all accept that and wish him well. To the new staff, we work together as a committee. Much good work goes on but what I find is that the officials are so into what we are trying to do. It is just so refreshing for us, thanks to them. I look forward to working with the new staff.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (31 Mar 2022)
Eugene Murphy: Unfortunately, I have had difficulties with the technology. I was not able to get the meeting up on the screen. Many people could not get into the meeting. It was not only an issue with this committee but it also happened on the committee for social protection this week. I do not know what is wrong. I would like to have been involved in the discussions on the pensions, but that was the...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (31 Mar 2022)
Eugene Murphy: We might include it for discussion in the next meeting. I could not get into the meeting earlier and I do not want to hold up the meeting now, but I am very anxious that we follow up on a procedure that we said we would move along, that is, trying to hold some meetings in different parts of the country. I know Covid has been an issue in that regard, and it is still a bit of an issue, but I...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I am not a full member of the committee but I am grateful to get an opportunity to speak to our guests today. I know most of them. It is incredible what Fáilte Ireland is doing, particularly in my area with the Hidden Heartlands and with Mr. Paddy Mathews and all the team. We were left behind for way too long but that, I am glad to report, is changing rapidly. The amount of...

Eugene Murphy: I should, of course, have wished Ms Campbell well.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: Ms Campbell is a friend and neighbour. How can we push this forward for her? Many people out there could help. How can we push this out to the public?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: Perhaps social media and local media could be used. I was involved with local media before I came into the Oireachtas. Perhaps we can use special programming on those media. People would tune in and find out about the opportunities. They are not informed at the moment. Ms Campbell is suggesting we go to the local authorities to push that.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I am in support of the retention of the 9% VAT rate. That is vital. On a positive note, if the situation in Ukraine improves, I think we will take off like a rocket and tourism will do well. Although we are all at a low point at the moment, I am quite optimistic for the future. Communities in Roscommon are enthused and excited about these new developments and the Hidden Heartlands scheme....
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: May I make one very brief point?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: This is important.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: There is not.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: This is an important point. There is a new training school in Castlerea, County Roscommon, called An Chistin. It received €2 million in Government funding, which is significant. It is training people at the moment. I note that.
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I support Senator Carrigy's amendment. I also support the comments of Senator Cassels, who touched on the point with regard to amateur sports. The level of abuse directed at the people to whom he referred is totally unacceptable. It is typically said to me that many professional sportspeople are well paid, but that is not the point. The point is that no abuse should be directed towards...
- Seanad: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (26 Apr 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I support the comments of Senators Cassells, Sherlock and Ruane. Despite all the protestations, advertising for gambling is getting worse. I watch TV and content online and it is getting worse by the week. It is appalling. As other Senators said, it leaves destruction all over the place. I fully agree we need to ban the advertising. It has gone beyond where it should be. There have...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 May 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I rise to discuss Lyme disease. I give my full support to the people who have spent a number of hours outside the gates of Leinster House today. Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial infection carried by a tick, as we all know, and has quickly become one of the most common diseases in Europe. It is beyond time that Ireland recognises the dangers of that disease. When we were young and...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 May 2022)
Eugene Murphy: With regret, I once again rise today to speak up on behalf of Robert Pether, who is callously locked up in an Iraqi jail. We in this House fought very hard for Richard O'Halloran, and rightly so. I was part of that campaign, as were many other Senators. However, I am sad to say that nobody seems to be interested in doing much about Robert Pether's case. For those who do not know, Mr....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 May 2022)
Eugene Murphy: I agree with Senator Buttimer and others who have welcomed the extension of the 9% VAT rate, for which we have all been lobbying. It is important for businesses that there be such incentives to help them recover from the pandemic. The recovery is still ongoing, and if our tourism season takes off in the way we believe it will, the extension will help the sector to recover. I wish to...
