Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Gerry Horkan: I did not keep track of how many hours I was in the Chair for this debate but I think it was a fair few. On my own behalf, I thank everybody, particularly today, for managing to get through 25 amendments in just over an hour and not having to use our guillotine at the end.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)

Gerry Horkan: I thank all Members for their co-operation. I thank the Minister for his many hours spent here, however many it was, and all his officials. I do not think we will spend this kind of number of hours on too many pieces of legislation in the future. It is a big day. We have managed to conclude Committee Stage before the summer recess, for which I thank all Members.

Gerry Horkan: I welcome all Members back. A fantastic job has been done on the Chamber. Like everyone else, I am delighted that we are back in this historic room. I hope we will have a productive session right up until next summer, at least. I echo the comments of Senator McDowell and others about Lyric FM. Lyric FM's budget is a tiny percentage of RTÉ's total budget. It has been suggested that...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Gerry Horkan: I do not doubt that. Last Friday, the Central Bank issued a very stern warning. It pointed out that in the event of a no-deal Brexit or a hard Brexit, the national debt could increase by €22 billion in the next couple of years. Corporation tax is incredibly welcome. The more of it the better. It went from €4 billion in 2014 to €10 billion last year. If it had stayed...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the Leader for outlining the business of the day. I apologise that I was not here yesterday for the Leader's response. I had to meet a delegation who were over with the French ambassador. I do not like it when I am not here to listen to the Leader's response and I am sorry I was not here.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Gerry Horkan: I do not like doing it and I am sorry that I did. I have a couple of points today. I would like at some point for us to have a discussion about the cost of rent, particularly in Dublin. Kennedy Wilson is almost boasting that it is making more money here than it does in Los Angeles, and figures show that 55% of the take-home pay of some Dublin dwellers is now going on rent. It is something...
