- Seanad: Finance (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2015: Second Stage (12 Nov 2015)
Mary White: I thank the Minister of State for his attendance. I wish to raise two issues which are dear to my heart. First, the capital gains tax relief regime is not competitive with the UK. The extension of capital gains tax relief is restricted to the first €1 million of gains. By contrast, the UK has a simpler, clearer and more attractive relief which applies a flat 10% rate to...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2015)
Mary White: I was not free to attend the House yesterday but I wish to have on the record my abhorrence at the disgusting behaviour by the Daesh group in Paris on Friday evening. Hopefully East and West, the United States and Russia, can work together and put their power struggles behind them to try and bring about a resolution to this most serious issue in the Middle East. I welcome yesterday's...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Employment Equality (Abolition of Mandatory Retirement Age) Bill 2014: Discussion (18 Nov 2015)
Mary White: It gives me great pleasure to support Deputy Anne Ferris's Bill on the abolition of a mandatory retirement age. I introduced an Employment Equality (Amendment) Bill in the Seanad in 2012 on behalf of Fianna Fáil, which had the same objective. I brought that Bill to Second Stage but did not push it to a vote in case the Government chose not to support it. However, the former Minister...

Mary White: I do not propose to make a speech. It is important to point out that I introduced legislation in 2012 with the same objective as the Bill we are discussing today.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Employment Equality (Abolition of Mandatory Retirement Age) Bill 2014: Discussion (18 Nov 2015)
Mary White: I held a public meeting six or seven years ago on ageing and ageism. One of the most dramatic moments at my public meeting was a woman, not unlike Ms Gallagher, stating that she had to retire upon her marriage. She cried. She was approaching 65 years of age and had to retire again. I congratulate Ms Gallagher on her statement at this meeting. I am not allowed to state my reasons but I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2015)
Mary White: I want to raise a question and look for answers from the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton. On 20 October, the Enterprise Ireland chief executive, Ms Julie Sinnamon, presented her annual report for 2014.She advised us that indigenous companies now employ 180,000 people, comprising 156,000 full-time and 23,000 part-time employees. The total expenditure of...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Opportunities to Prevent Youth Unemployment and Promote Job Creation: Discussion (26 Nov 2015)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Opportunities to Prevent Youth Unemployment and Promote Job Creation: Discussion (26 Nov 2015)
Mary White: I thank all the witnesses for attending the committee today. It is fabulous to see both sides of the island coming together to talk sense and see what we can do. The figure I have for youth unemployment for October 2015 is 19.7%. Having started a business in the late 1980s, I saw the dramatic change that it makes in people's lives when they get a job. Their self-confidence and demeanour...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Opportunities to Prevent Youth Unemployment and Promote Job Creation: Discussion (26 Nov 2015)
Mary White: Can I just ask one more question? I am continually perplexed as to why west Belfast has never broken out of the cycle of unemployment. I just do not understand it. What the hell is holding it back? I know there is a cultural problem there and I understand that, but why is the system in the North not trying passionately to help the people there? I am not asking Ms Croskery to solve the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Opportunities to Prevent Youth Unemployment and Promote Job Creation: Discussion (26 Nov 2015)
Mary White: While I understand what Mr. Baldwin is saying, young people have told me they cannot get a relationship going with the person they meet when they attend Intreo. These are young people who are somewhat disadvantaged, the people who hated school. When they attend Intreo, they fall out with the contact person.
