- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Staff Recruitment (9 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I welcome the Minister of State. We have had debates on this issue in the past and he gave me a very promising answer, but I am very frustrated at this stage because it is my understanding that, despite funding having been sanctioned for a nursing position at least eight if not 12 months ago, progress has stalled. When I wrote to University Hospital Limerick to ask it to outline the...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Staff Recruitment (9 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I thank the Minister of State for that offer because I raised this issue with Mr. Reid at the committee last week when we discussed MRI scanners and overcrowding. If a neurological clinical nurse specialist was put in place it would definitely help to reduce waiting lists. The more pressure we can put on Mr. Reid the better.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I wish to raise the decision of the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, to grant a licence to Irish Cement to burn up to 90,000 tonnes of toxic waste daily. Irish Cement is based in Castlemungret in Limerick where there are a number of schools along with plans for up to 800 houses. The area also contains a number of nursing homes and a respite home, so there are a lot of very vulnerable...
- Seanad: Free Education (Prohibition of Fees and Charges) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (9 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: The Minister is very welcome. I welcome the sentiments in the Bill and the fact that we are supporting it today. I have reservations about one or two aspects but I believe they could be ironed out. They concern extracurricular activities, such as school trips, or schemes such as the book rental scheme. Will these be affected, or will there be a way to work around the issues? Where there...

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I raise two matters relating to the mid west. First is yesterday's good news with €10 million announced in the budget for new routes for which Shannon Airport can apply. That is very good news as there has been much discussion about Shannon Airport in the House recently. I also raise Facebook's policy. Facebook would not allow advertisements for a new book published on the monks at...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: The report in today's newspaper about University Hospital Limerick makes very stark reading. I have had contact from people who were there as patients in the past 24 hours and from staff. Eighty people are on trolleys and it reached a national all-time high of 82 in the past month. It is frightening to think that we are not into the winter months and yet 80 people are on trolleys. A...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I welcome the news received from the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy McHugh, that agreement has been reached in principle regarding a site for the replacement of St. Vincent's special school in Lisnagry in Limerick. The school serves children with profound educational difficulties, as well as children who are on the autism spectrum. I attended a Dóchas meeting recently at...
- Seanad: Traveller Culture and History in Education Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (16 Oct 2019)
Maria Byrne: I thank the Minister for coming to the House. I pay tribute to Senator Kelleher for all of the work she has put into the Bill. I also pay tribute to the members of her committee, but she has been the driving force behind the Bill. She made a contribution at the Joint Committee on Education and Skills when we were discussing it. Senator Mac Lochlainn has also been campaigning on the issue...
