Paul Coghlan: I might be as awkward if I was in the Chair. The people are not being given a proper choice. Dáil reform is fraught with difficulty and it could be mission impossible. We have no control over people's choices. I could speak further about democratic principles, but I will leave it at that. I am very grateful to the Chair.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I was not sure which Senator Coghlan was being called. The Cathaoirleach may recall that last week a Senator - I think it was Senator Thomas Byrne - quoted Senator Coghlan but did not clarify whether it was Senator Paul Coghlan or Senator Eamonn Coghlan.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: People were looking at me as though I had accused the Taoiseach of deciding an issue over a pint in a pub.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: With respect to the Acting Leader of the Opposition, we are wasting time. What is proposed deals with mortgages, title, registration thereof and so on. The code of conduct is an integral part of this. As stated by Senator Bacik, all of this discussion could take place this evening. In my view, thousands of people will not be affected. Hundreds of people may be but we do not yet know...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: It is not, with respect. There is due process in this country. This is a constitutional little republic. We will not do anything rash like that. There will not be thousands of people put out of their homes.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I will have to discuss that with Senator O'Sullivan elsewhere. I am sure we will manage to do that. The Leader is right. He cannot accept this amendment because we would be putting off until later what can usefully be debated this afternoon.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Like Senator Bacik I welcome tomorrow's debate on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill, but unlike her I do not see the church as interfering or dictating but merely having its say like everyone else, to which it is perfectly entitled. Everyone deserves to be heard. I know that some people on both sides of the argument are an annoyance and a total bloody nuisance, if I may say so....
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Of course that is a matter for the President, and I said that. There will be more of that anon in tomorrow's debate.
- Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a Chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: Céim an Choiste (Atógáil) - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: A Leas-Chathaoirligh, with respect to the speaker in possession, he upset Members. There was a call for a quorum. I must confess I was not paying attention, but I believe it was caused by remarks, inadvertent or otherwise, by Senator MacSharry and he should withdraw them.

Paul Coghlan: He has apologised. I am sorry. My apologies.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I am beginning to believe that the good weather is having some adverse effects on a number of colleagues. It is unsettling to see Senator Darragh O'Brien so upset each morning, particularly when there is no need for it. The Senator has a cordial relationship with the Leader and I am sure the leaders of the groups could, by means of a brief chat, agree everything - timeframes, etc. -...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I am coming to it. I just want to refer to the Smithwick tribunal, about which everyone should be quite pleased because all of the witnesses have been heard and the public hearings have been brought to a conclusion.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: The report will be forthcoming within months and we can debate it then. I do not, therefore, see the need for a debate to be held at this point. We should have a chat about the matter. I do like to converse with Senator O'Brien.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I encourage Senator O'Brien, the Leader and the leaders of the other groups to have a chat about the matter. I am happy to facilitate everyone at any time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I remind the Leader of the concern many people have about the future of the IFSC and the banks, about which I spoke about here some time ago. I know a number of the banks are, unfortunately, winding down. I am talking about foreign-owned banks. I am worried about competition but there is a much more immediate threat reported in The Irish Times this morning. It concerns a radical new plan...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I thought Senator Norris's mother was a FitzPatrick from Laois.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 Jul 2013)
Paul Coghlan: As Members are aware, a most unfortunate and sad freak accident occurred in Killarney over the weekend. I refer of course to the sad passing of that most genial businessman, James Gleeson, in the heart of Killarney town. I also wish to be associated with the expressions of sympathy towards his wife, Grace, son Eoin, brother Donagh and sister Maureen. He was a much loved, well liked and...
