Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I find that surprising because I would have thought it was the purview of the Irish Sports Council to decide on funding. The money comes from the taxpayer to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. There is then a legal process under which the council operates in the disbursal of those funds. I find it a little surprising that the Minister of State intervened and was proposing a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I am not saying it did not. What else would it do? It would, would it not?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: In terms of what has been outlined about the statutory obligations and responsibilities of the Irish Sports Council, I would have thought that was an issue for it to put forward in its dialogue with the IABA as a governing body, rather than for the Minister of State to intervene at that point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: We all agree that the Minister of State, Deputy Ring, has given an inordinate amount of time to trying to resolve this issue. I compliment him on that. The role of the Irish Sports Council and how it decides on its funding under its statutory obligations might arise in the future. That is why I raised it. My next question relates specifically to the meeting of 14 September and what...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I am glad that Mr. Kirwan has clarified that matter. Would he have a response to Billy Walsh's statement on the manner in which the contract was dealt with?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: Was Mr. Kirwan surprised that there were 60 amendments to the original contract on which hands were supposed to have been shook?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: Yes, I was thinking the same.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: Sure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I asked the question to get this response and have clarity.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: Therefore, there was no ulterior motive in it at all-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: -----because it was contained in a statement and seemed to have been a breaking point for him.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: Okay.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I think everybody will agree - I meant to say this earlier - that I have huge admiration for the manner in which the IABA has maintained unity in boxing on this island and particularly how it has managed time and again to cross the sectarian divide in the North. I only wish the soccer authorities would take a leaf out of its book. It has done a tremendous service for the country in that regard.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (3 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I thank the Cathaoirleach for taking this matter, which I raised on the Order of Business some weeks ago. I am also grateful that the Minister for Health has taken the time out from his busy schedule to be with us. I want to put on the record straight away that, in the context of this motion, I am not calling for a suspension of the vaccination programme. What I am looking at, however, are...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (3 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I thank the Minister and I am glad that he has put on the record that there are 921 reports of suspected adverse reactions. He said the symptoms he outlined in the same paragraph are short-lived. He should tell that to the parents of the over 100 people who have been experiencing much more serious medical, emotional and mental conditions for two, three and four years after getting the...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: The country is enthralled by the continuing soap opera involving the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Deputy Alan Kelly, and the Department of Finance on what the Government is to do about homelessness. It would do justice to "Fair City" and all the other TV soap operas. We have been following this with great interest through the Irish Independent, which has...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I bow to the Senator's greater expertise in that area.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I wish I could share the Senator's enthusiasm for that appointment. However, anybody who knows the newly elected Speaker will know he has set his face against any form of immigration reform, which is impacting Irish families and is contrary to consistent Irish Government policy. As such, I do not welcome Mr. Ryan's appointment one little bit, despite his Irish heritage. I welcome Senator...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I thank the Leader.

Seanad: Child Care (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage (4 Nov 2015)

Paschal Mooney: I welcome the Minister to the House. Fianna Fáil welcomes the Bill. It is a step in the right direction towards the goal of a legal entitlement to aftercare services for all young people leaving care. The Bill imposes a statutory duty on Tusla to prepare an aftercare plan for such young people. However, we regard this only as a first step. The Department cannot use the legislation...
