Hopefully, there will be only one vote and we will resume shortly. It will give our guests time to confer on the answers to those questions. I echo the comments that were made about Meath.

It is a very important one and he and Mr. Barry O'Leary will make a very good team. I am sorry that Mr. Barry O'Leary's tenure in office could end this year but he might still be involved. I wish them the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IDA Ireland: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Dec 2013)

Damien English: The national spatial strategy is being redrawn and it would be important for the IDA to take an active role in this review of strategy. We believe that some areas are suffering from a lack of investment. Investment follows the national spatial strategy. The strategy has a role in creating an environment for job creation and it is important that the IDA is involved in that process.The...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Mental Health Awareness (15 Jan 2014)

Damien English: 778. To ask the Minister for Health in view of the fact that the programme for Government contains a commitment to develop a national dementia strategy and in view of the fact that this strategy is at an advanced stage of preparation if assurances will be given to the estimated 41,000 persons here with dementia and to their families that the plan will be published in quarter 1 2014; and if he...

Charities (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (22 Jan 2014)

Damien English: I will speak fast for once in my life. I welcome the decision of the Minister, Deputy Shatter, to establish the charities regulator. He has announced an aggressive timeline for establishing it. In fairness to him, this decision was taken some time ago and his announcement is not a knee-jerk reaction to the crisis in the CRC, as some critics have alleged. I am concerned, however, over the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Jobs: Discussion (28 Jan 2014)

Damien English: To back up Deputy Lawlor's last point, we have had feedback from businesses which are interviewing for internship positions that graduates are very frustrated when they discover they must be unemployed for up to six months before qualifying for JobBridge and other schemes. We accept that these programmes are primarily designed to get people off social welfare and back into work, but people...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Jobs: Discussion (28 Jan 2014)

Damien English: I accept that and, on a personal level, I agree with Mr. Murphy. However, this issue has been raised with us quite a lot by business owners who have informed us that there are people they would like to take on but they cannot do so. I am not stating that there are thousands involved in this regard but it is an issue.

Damien English: It was reviewed and changed last year and I understand it has adapted to the market. From what we have heard, however, it has capacity to bring in even more investment. I do not know if sufficient work is being done to promote it. Such work may be being done but the feedback we have received indicates that more could be done.
