To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his views on reports that more than 200,000 written-off cars are still being driven; his views on whether this is a factor in the 18% increase in road deaths in 2013 compared with 2012; the safeguards currently in place to ensure written-off cars do not re-enter the car sales market; and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: SIPTU and NBRU (15 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: I thank the witnesses for their presentations and share their concerns. Notwithstanding that the previous Government established the NTA and began the implementation of the EU directive, I have always been an advocate of the direct award model. Based on the advice I have received, I believe it meets the spirit of the EU directive while at the same time protecting the important integrated...
- Irish Water: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (16 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate. There is one central question, namely, how did the water consumers in this country get stuck for €85 million in consultancy charges? It is as simple as that. An effort has been made by backbenchers, in particular in the Labour Party, to make the Minister the scapegoat. He has big and broad shoulders, is well used to that and...
- Irish Water: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (16 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: Why did it not apply? The answer is that Fine Gael had a cosy deal with Bord Gáis through its connections and links with the person who was the author of the NewEra document. It was handed on a plate to a company which clearly did not have the expertise. If it had the expertise, it would not have had to buy in all these extra consultancy services. Take what the State has in the ESB....
- Recent Severe Storm Damage: Statements (16 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate and I thank you, a Cheann Comhairle, for facilitating an opportunity for all Members to discuss this important issue. The Minister has outlined the background to the storms and freak weather events that took place in recent days. He identified the impact they have had on many communities, particularly on the western seaboard, and he...
- Recent Severe Storm Damage: Statements (16 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: I appeal to the Minister to put appropriate funding in place to ensure councils can carry out the necessary work. There are two aspects to it. The clean-up repair work is under way, by and large. Councils are getting that done and their attitude is that they will pay for it later when, it is hoped, the Minister can provide funding. There is a much more serious issue, however, which is how...
- Recent Severe Storm Damage: Statements (16 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: -----he would be doing considerably good work on behalf of people on the west coast if he started that plan. Perhaps when he moves on to greater things at some point in the future, perhaps as European Commissioner for disaster relief, he will have left behind a legacy that put in train the first response to coastal erosion and the protection of coastal communities.

Timmy Dooley: Has the Acting Chairman ever seen Deputy Micheál Martin when he is confrontational?
- European Council: Statements (21 Jan 2014)
Timmy Dooley: I welcome the opportunity to obtain clarification on a couple of points made by the Taoiseach. I sensed a lack of urgency at the summit on the jobs crisis, but perhaps the Minister of State, Deputy Paschal Donohoe, might enlighten me that the opposite was the case. When the currency seemed to be under threat and financial institutions seemed to be on the brink of collapse, various crisis...

Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Timmy Dooley: I am not sure if the Minister has any familiarity with Loc8. I have had some communication about it from a group that is proposing it as an alternative to the project the State is undertaking. The group seems to believe a system exists that could be provided more cheaply. Has the Minister or his officials had an opportunity to review that?
