- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: I thank Senator McGreehan for all the work she has done on the day that is in it in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I see everyone wearing pink, ranging from the Cathaoirleach's pink tie to the pink ribbons to the pink or salmon shirts, I am not sure which. It is great and it is lovely to see it. I thank everyone for their support. Every family in Ireland is affected by loss and by breast...

Aisling Dolan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House to mark Dyslexia Awareness Week. I refer in particular to her role as Minister of State with special responsibility for special education and inclusion. Aisling Dolan: Imagine running a marathon when you are in sixth class. I have never run any marathon. My pinnacle was half the Connemarathon. Galway Sports Partnership and Healthy Galway are investing funds from Sport Ireland in Ballinasloe in preparation for a community sports hub application. Marathonkids Ireland is going to be run out in 30 primary schools, so children in sixth class will have the...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: I thank Ms Austick. Having wider areas open at first year within our colleges and third level institutions might be a way to support students. I ask Ms Neville about the leaving certificate. We have heard about people dropping out in first year. What can we do with the leaving certificate to try to prevent that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: I thank Ms Neville. I think an extra 4,000 places are being allocated through the CAO. There are approximately 60 apprenticeships and they are looking at developing another 18. We could look to increase the numbers, as Ms Neville mentioned, doing apprenticeships and PLCs. Can I bring in Mr. Gillespie on behalf of TUI?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: I thank Mr. Gillespie. It is crucial that students are able to engage with the likes of the career guidance person in each of the colleges. What has happened with the development of the Departments of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Education is that it is clear how the budgets are being allocated between education and further and higher education. An...

Aisling Dolan: Go raibh míle maith agat.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: Yes. My question follows on from what we were saying. A few queries arose regarding career guidance and the support around same. A website, careersportal.ie, is a good resource that is accessible to students, parents and educators. I believe it was Ms Neville who made an interesting comment about the supports in place for DEIS schools. There are DEIS levels 1 and 2 for urban and rural...

Aisling Dolan: Would reform of the leaving certificate reduce the impact that access to particular grinds has?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: In other words, reform of the leaving certificate would allow more inclusion and access and reduce the divide between those who can and those who cannot access more grinds and so on, which is a costly endeavour. I thank Ms Neville.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: I understand. It is dependent on the census. Our last census was 2016 and the next will be in one or two years' time, so we are lagging behind in terms of data. A crucial point is that we depend on statistics about the levels of need - one-parent families, high levels of poverty and disadvantage. We must ensure that DEIS designation targets those areas. It is important that we allocate...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Reform: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: Today we are hearing representations from students and teachers about matters at primary, post-primary and further and higher education levels, including PLC courses. I thank everyone for submitting their opening statements. There is a body of information there and there is an awful lot in them about the role of senior cycle reform. I thank all the organisations that are with us today, the...

It is has been incredible. It is incredible also to think that they...
- Joint Committee On Health: Mental Health Services: Samaritans Ireland (5 Oct 2021)
Aisling Dolan: It is one of those things we are trying to promote very much in our regional areas. At the moment, I am trying to see if we can get people who will be able to help us with home help because it is a real crisis at the moment even getting home help hours for regional areas. I am very happy to do that. I have offices in a number of areas in the constituency. I am happy to promote that and to...
