Kevin O'Keeffe: I will use some of Deputy Anne Rabbitte's time. I thank my colleague, Deputy Michael McGrath, for bringing this Private Members' motion to the floor of the House. The fact that it is three years since the collapse of Setanta Insurance and 1,666 claims remain unsettled at a cost of up to €95 million is wholly unacceptable. The report of the Department of Finance that was published in...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kevin O'Keeffe: When I learned that the Minister was appearing before the committee this morning, I thought there was an air of hope in the engagement but it has turned out to be more like a scratched record of the previous engagement with the Minister. The authority I wish to criticise is the NTA. It has acted like a widow whose husband was only buried in the past week and who walks out the following day...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kevin O'Keeffe: What we are trying to convey is that we want to maintain these routes because they provide a social service as much as a transport service. The Minister mentioned that he was not in a position to wave his cheque book. That is fine, but at the same time he is talking to the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Varadkar, to look for more money. How can Bus Éireann talk to the unions...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kevin O'Keeffe: I think this is something people are not aware of. I raised this question with the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality. - Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kevin O'Keeffe: I welcome the witnesses. I wish to congratulate Michael Finn who serves in Cork on his elevation to assistant commissioner and wish him all the best. Rural Ireland is not bandit country. In the past few days, an old age pensioner had the misfortune to be murdered in Ballysaggart, which is just over the road from me. As the Garda was able to do its job, that means the force is on the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kevin O'Keeffe: In my time in the local authority, we had big demand for signs to be erected because they were seen as a hindrance. Obviously we will not get gardaí situated at the same point every day 24-7, 31 days of the month and 12 months of the year. The vans are the same thing. People are aware that the byroads are danger zones and that it is hit and miss with the vans.
