Seanad: Interest Rates Reduction: Statements. (12 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: These are documents held in trust or safe keeping by a bank and they may include prize bonds, other bonds, shares or certificates. The Government should direct that this area be investigated, as this is an important issue. I appeal to the AIB, as I am a customer there, to bring down their interest rates to the minimum level possible. Savers are getting a bad deal at present, yet nobody seems...

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Second Stage (Resumed). (18 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: In the words of a publican, the Senator's time is up.

Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: You are bad losers.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: On No. 14, when does the Leader expect to have a debate on the review of the licensing system as experienced by local radio stations? This is particularly relevant because of the decision by the Independent Broadcasting Commission to withdraw the franchise from North West Radio, without any great reason. I want the circumstances surrounding this decision to be investigated. It means the loss...

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: At least I do not break strikes by going on radio, like some public representatives.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: I accept that. The situation is that it has provided a service—

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Michael McDowell, to the House. Section 1 agreed to. SECTION 2.

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: I agree with the reasonable point made by the Minister. The amendment is unreasonable. In my area of Castlecoote where there are three pubs the people would be appalled to think that it was necessary to have surveillance on them when coming out from pubs at a reasonable hour and in reasonable condition. Everything in the area is run in an ideal way.

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: It would not be appropriate to have a George Orwell big brother type of operation. The proposal is unusual for the Labour Party. It surprises me that the party is getting more left wing. Fianna Fáil is more liberal.

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: Indeed, it is like that. It is the Workers' Party influence. Senator Bohan's point was reasonable. Most of the big pubs have installed these cameras for their own security and safety. A recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Enterprise and Small Business dealt with insurance costs, which are appalling. In rural areas it should be at the discretion of the owners of premises whether to...

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: I congratulate the Minister on his reasonableness on this section in so far as age is concerned and I hope he will be as reasonable as we continue with the Bill.

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: It is reasonable because otherwise life would be nearly impossible for publicans, particularly those with families, who perhaps leave a son or daughter in charge of the house, which is attached to the premises, for an hour or two during the day. This type of thing happens in my area and one must be reasonable about such cases. For instance, if a garda came in and saw a young person of 15 or...

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: The Senator is going ahead slightly.

Terry Leyden: I was seeking to help Senator Terry.

Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2003: Committee Stage. (19 Jun 2003)

Terry Leyden: I support Senator O'Toole. It is not easy to get extensions. I was secretary of a festival committee and involved in this kind of thing.
