Seanad: Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (7 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: Amendments Nos. 7 to 9, inclusive, are related and may be discussed together by agreement. Is that agreed? Agreed. Amendment No. 8 is a logical alternative to amendment No. 7. If amendment No. 7 is agreed, then amendment No. 8 cannot be moved.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I was not in the House yesterday so I do not know if this has been already done, but I want to express my admiration and great love of the late Paddy Moloney, who, because of my background in radio and as a voluntary director of a number of festivals, I was privileged to have met. I met him only twice but he left a lasting impression on me. It is amazing to hear the BBC, Sky News, the...

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: Go raibh maith agat, Leas Cathaoirleach, agus gabhaim buíochas roimh an t-Aire Stáit, an Teachta Ossian Smyth. Beidh mé críochnaithe i gceann cúig nóiméad. I will not going to stand here and say that €2 was given here, €5 was given there and €30 was given somewhere else. However, in my view, considering that we are not yet out of...

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (Resumed) (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: Through the Chair, it was welcomed.

Seanad: Peat Harvesting: Statements (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: On a point of clarification, by what time is this debate to conclude?

Seanad: Peat Harvesting: Statements (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I get very annoyed in all these debates about the horticulture industry. North-east Roscommon, as the Minister of State knows because he has relations I am very friendly with in that region, and the areas around Ballinasloe, Galway and Shannonbridge are major peat areas. They are very seldom referenced in the debates. When we talked about job...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Nitrates Directive, Water Quality and Pollution: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I will try to keep to direct questions because it has been a pretty long session and, again, some of the questions have been clarified. I thank the three ladies for their engagement today. I looked at Dr. Deakin's job description; she is described as a senior catchment scientist. Does that take her all over the country and does it allow her to engage with communities on the work she is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Nitrates Directive, Water Quality and Pollution: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I will comment very briefly on herbicide contamination because that is vital in terms of what they are doing in group water schemes. It seems to be a very interesting scheme. The reason I am saying that is that sometimes rural communities and farmers probably feel that they perhaps get unfair coverage or do not get credit for what they are doing. This is really something that should be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I thank Mr. Joyce and Mr. Cummins for their presentations. Mr. Cummins is the CEO in my county of Roscommon. I was a local authority member there for many years. He and his team seem to have a very good approach to settling Travellers in various parts of the county, which is quite successful. In most situations it works out without conflict. I also acknowledge Mr. Joyce's contribution....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I apologise.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (12 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I apologise.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I was unavoidably absent from the meeting, which had just completed when I got to it. I was tied up with other issues. Can we deal with the specifics of that, for my information? Is that particular lady petitioner referring to a specific case or cases, or is it just a general type of comment that all laws relating to environmental issues should be adhered to?

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: There is not, and if the recommendation from the committee is to go forward, I will fully endorse it. My questions are not based on what is in front of me. I was wondering how the matter was discussed at the committee meeting this morning in terms of the comments the petitioner was making. I presume she is referring to the matter from a general perspective. Is that correct?

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: I agree.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: That was not my issue at all and I was not questioning that. This is a significant issue now and I was wondering how the committee dealt with it this morning. I acknowledge the amount of information that has come from the secretariat and I am in no way pointing a finger at it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Oct 2021)

Eugene Murphy: Even though I do not always agree with Senator Keogan, and did not agree with some of her comments today, I am glad she has recovered and is back in the Chamber. It is good to see her back in full health again. I join other Members in extending our sympathies to the family of the Conservative MP Sir David Amess and also to the families of Brendan Kennelly and Máire Mhac an tSaoi. I...
