Order of Business (4 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: Sorry?

Dairy Sector: Statements (4 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: The Minister was right when he stated at the outset that we are living in exciting times. The abolition of milk quotas on 31 March no doubt will be a major change for Irish dairy farmers. While we in Sinn Féin do not call for their retention and realise this is a decision that comes, like many others, from Brussels, we are concerned by the many consequences of this development. It is...

To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he will confirm that the €27.2 million from the European Union, which was to be reimbursed to farmers who had deductions from their direct payments over €2000 in 2013 has been paid to farmers, as was promised, in early 2015. [10140/15]

An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Votáil Uachtaráin) 2014: An Dara Céim [Private Members] - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Presidential Voting) Bill 2014: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: I do not believe there is a single Deputy from a rural constituency who is not well acquainted with the position in respect of emigration or with the loss of our youngest and brightest people as a result of the economic circumstances that prevail. Despite Government spin about a so-called recovery, the available data shows that the number of people in employment in the south west fell by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (24 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: I thank the BIM officials for the report. I have almost identical concerns to Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív about the plight of over 80% of those involved in the industry. This affects every little coastal pier in the west, the south west and on the east coast. Much of the local economy depends on what is produced by the small operator. There is nothing coming either from the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (24 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: If the fish being caught off the Irish coast were landed in Ireland, the knock-on effect and added value would be astronomical. This would be the case even if only the big Irish boats landed their catches. However, there seems to be no sense of loyalty or patriotism in this regard. Killybegs is one of the finest ports in the country with fantastic infrastructure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (24 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: That is if it gets €10 million.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (24 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: I wish to make a personal observation in response to some of the comments. It is all down to distribution of the quotas. When a very small number of vessels is the beneficiary of a national quota then one has a serious problem. The committee heard there were 60,000 dairy producers 15 to 20 years ago and now there are 17,000. One could ask whether that is beneficial to the country and what...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (24 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: It does not matter. It is just an observation anyway. There are social consequences involved in ring-fencing quota for a select few to the detriment of the overwhelming majority.

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Mar 2015)

Martin Ferris: The Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Bill, if implemented and carried out to the letter, can make a difference. It needs to be supported in that regard. Measures to alleviate the effects of climate change and to lower our carbon emissions are becoming more urgent and necessary as the years pass. In my constituency of Kerry, we are very aware of the effects of climate change,...
