Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Conflict Resolution (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: The conflict puts millions in peril due to starvation and famine. Ireland has supported various UN funds to ensure immediate aid gets in but also to ensure humanitarian corridors are created to facilitate aid to Sudan. These are also resource wars with people waging war with a view to getting their hands on resources. The link between this and migration is very strong. The neighbouring...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Conflict Resolution (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: I thought we were over time.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: The Deputy also attacked me when I went to Israel to seek to get Irish citizens out of Gaza. His fellow travellers did likewise, as well as trolling and misinformation online. We got 56 people out.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: Yet the Deputy comes in here and says he is handing me letters to get people out.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: You are just a hypocrite.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: Come off it.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: Regarding the specific people, I will do everything I can to get people out of Gaza and that means engaging with the Israeli authorities. Our ambassador in Israel has engaged repeatedly with Israeli authorities and that resulted in very substantial numbers of Irish citizens and their dependants getting out of Gaza. If you had your way, nobody would get out of Gaza.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: You are just behaving hypocritically. I went out there to get people out and you attacked me. Then you come in the following day and say "Please get them out". Come off it. What credibility have you?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Middle East (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: You are a disgrace. You are unbelievable.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: Ní aontaím leis an Teachta. Admhaím ar dtús go bhfuil na hospidéil agus na hionaid éigeandála faoi bhrú faoi láthair ach tá plean ann. Ní plean gearrthéarmach atá ann anois, ach plean don bhliain ar fad. Tá infheistíocht faoi leith curtha isteach in ospidéil na tíre seo ó tháinig an Rialtas seo...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: First, the Deputy’s analysis is wrong, actually. We need a multidimensional approach to healthcare. The Deputy is falling into the old trap. It is about tertiary hospital capacity for him but actually it is not. That is an important part of it but it is about building up community care and primary care. I attended Ballincollig primary care centre two weeks ago. It is a fantastic...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: Ah, keep quiet, Deputy Gould.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: It is a well worn tactic to interrupt me every time I respond. There was very significant investment in Gurranabraher in primary care and enhanced community care. We have to be very careful that we do not lose out on the huge momentum that is being built up in terms of community and enhanced care and primary care because that ultimately helps to keep patients out of emergency departments....

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: We are not. We have increased the number of beds by over 1,000. CUH, two or three years ago, was a bit slow in making submissions on the capital projects. There is new governance there now. The projects have come in. The Deputy does not have to lecture me about Cork or investment at Cork hospital. I was the Minister for Health. It is the only hospital that has a maternity hospital on...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: You do not.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: First, we did not decide last night not to join the South African case. That is misinformation and it is disingenuous. That spin is wrong.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: We have been very consistent in calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. We were one of the first European Union countries to come out and call, and rightly, for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for unimpeded aid to go into Gaza, which are the two most urgent things that have to happen. Third is the release of all hostages that are being held by Hamas and then to get into a...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jan 2024)

Micheál Martin: It is creating false perceptions. Outside, people looking in at Ireland say that Ireland is pro-Palestinian and pro a Palestinian state. That is what people see about Ireland. We are having an internal debate here. Certain parties seem to be trying to say that they are more virtuous than the parties over here in terms of how much they care about the cause of Palestine.
