Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Bill 2013: Irish Timber Council and IFFPA (15 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: I welcome the witnesses. Like everybody else, I would be concerned if Ministers would not meet relevant bodies. The Glennons are based in my constituency where I think they have access to anybody they like in terms of making their case. I hope Ministers will meet people because it is important to have interaction where people are bringing forward proposals and that the people, who are...

I thank the Ceann Comhairle for selecting this issue, which allows me to ventilate the concerns of...

Topical Issue Debate: Court Accommodation Refurbishment (16 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: Surely, within the confines of a huge array of buildings, it is possible to secure necessary accommodation to enable the District Court to continue to sit in Mullingar during the course of renovation work at the existing courthouse.

Topical Issue Debate: Court Accommodation Refurbishment (16 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: We will take it as read.

Topical Issue Debate: Court Accommodation Refurbishment (16 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: It is fortuitous that the Minister of State is here because he is a practical person. I am glad he is taking this debate notwithstanding the fact that it is part of the Minister for Justice and Equality's portfolio. I am very glad of that. The Minister for Justice and Equality and I are very good friends. Looking at it on straight line economics, one place the OPW has already indicated...

(21 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: I thank the Minister for his comprehensive review and congratulate him and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Howlin, on securing the funding that is very important for the sustainability of rural areas. It is important now to know how the various schemes will be focused to achieve their objectives and to minimise administration costs. Administration includes...

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 30 - Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Revised)
(21 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: I accept what the Minister said but why would maps be sent to a farmer being reviewed that exclude land he legitimately owns, on which he has claimed previously? I do not refer to land that is leased. It is land next door to his house that is excluded. That is the basis of the overclaim that is alleged against him.

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 30 - Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Revised)
(21 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: Under subhead A8, the Bord Iascaigh Mhara grant, there is an increase of about €2 million. The Minister has outlined that this will be the Vote in 2014. I, too, welcome the beef genomics scheme. I come from a traditional beef fattening county. Suckler cow herds are the genesis of our beef industry and that sector has suffered. The Minister indicated yesterday that there will be...

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 30 - Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Revised)
(21 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: Does the reduction in the allocation for TB testing signify an improvement in the control of the disease, which would be welcome? Do the savings under the fallen animal scheme derive from the changes that have been introduced such as the distances from the knackery? I raised this in the Dáil when they were implemented in December. With regard to the control of horses, I do not...

(21 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: I realise the figures on the installation aid and farm retirement schemes are historical and have been paid out by now but is the Minister open to considering another installation aid scheme for young farmers under the new RDP? It is the most effective policy instrument at his disposal to increase land mobility.

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Voluntary Sector Funding (23 Jan 2014)

Willie Penrose: 163. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if he will ensure that funding for volunteer centres will not be reduced as it would have a severe and negative impact upon their ability to carry out important work and functions; if in particular he will recognise the imposition of an 8% cut to a volunteer centre (details supplied) would be detrimental to its continued...
