Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Entitlements for Self-Employed: Discussion with Self-Employed Alliance Dundalk (3 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: I apologise for my having had to leave to attend a vote in the Seanad. However, I brought the presentation with me and was reading it when voting. We are all singing from the same hymn sheet. Since I became elected, I have raised the problems of the self-employed on numerous occasions in the Seanad; this is on public record. Every time there was a debate on social welfare in the Seanad,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Entitlements for Self-Employed: Discussion with Self-Employed Alliance Dundalk (3 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: That 3% provides many benefits. The departmental officials were adamant that the benefits were good, in that they included an old age pension, a survivor's contributory pension, the bereavement grant and maternity benefit. We are trying to get the self-employed into the bracket for other benefits, for example, carer's, jobseeker's and illness. The extra payments would go towards them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Entitlements for Self-Employed: Discussion with Self-Employed Alliance Dundalk (3 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: This is more of an observation than a question. This morning I asked about an optional payment and I am disappointed that the group is not agreeable to this; it seems it is all or nothing. The bigger self-employed businesses, which are making some money, may fight such a process because they may not want to pay extra. I was hoping people could opt for a payment and if they fell on hard...

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: Like other Senators I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy White, to the Chamber. I am sure when he was sitting here he did not think he would be sitting where he is now. Well done and congratulations. There is no better man to take over the portfolio. I will keep my comments brief because I know we have time constraints. People have spoken about empty buildings throughout the country...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Managing Back to School Costs: Discussion (10 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: I thank the witnesses for coming here today. I know they have put great deal of work into their presentations. They want to put their message across. However, all the delegates are singing from the same hymn sheet as they have all the same ideas and have collaborated on suggestions. I found it very interesting that Fr. O'Connell is the only person who has mentioned e-books. I would be a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Managing Back to School Costs: Discussion (10 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: I was referring to it in a much broader sense. As our guests will be aware, there are even more issues that arise in respect of, for example, parents who transport children by car or whatever.

Seanad: Alcohol Consumption: Statements (17 Oct 2012)

Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and am glad to see him take up the position vacated by Deputy Shortall. We in this country can guarantee that this issue will always be a topic of conversation here. People talk about the weather, they talk about football and they talk about how much they had to drink at the weekend or the night before. We are currently campaigning for a "Yes"...
