- Access to the Countryside Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (14 Jun 2013)
Anne Ferris: I welcome the opportunity to speak on the Access to the Countryside Bill 2013 and I commend my colleague, Deputy Robert Dowds, on his pursuit of this important issue. I have very much enjoyed the debate over the past two hours or so. Like Deputy Anthony Lawlor from Johnstown, I represent a rural and urban constituency, but I take issue with his likening the idea of walking in the...

- An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a Chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Dara Céim (Atógáil) - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (19 Jun 2013)
Anne Ferris: I have my doubts about the need for this Bill. Although I support the passing of the enabling legislation, I have doubts about its intent. The decision to abolish a House of Parliament should not be taken lightly or rushed through, but that is exactly what is happening this week. The Seanad serves a purpose but abolishing it serves none. The need for reform, as advocated by others, is...

Vote 24 - Justice and Equality (Revised) (19 Jun 2013) Anne Ferris: I particularly welcome the information given by the Minister on the family law courts and on the seminar, which I will attend and I look forward to receiving details of it. It is an area in which I am very interested. We all hear anecdotal evidence from time to time about how families find it difficult to appear in court. The mediation services are not great - one could be sitting on a...

On consultancy services, from my understanding of the figures there is a 245% increase in respect of consultancy services for prisons and a 127% increase in this regard for the Property Registration Authority.

- Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Jun 2013)
Anne Ferris: It has taken 21 years to get to this day. I am proud that this Government has taken on an issue that its predecessors avoided. I am particularly proud of the Labour Party for continuing to apply pressure on the issue. As the only party which included a commitment to legislate for the X case in its manifesto, I am delighted to see that promise realised. It is a good day for democracy and...

Vote 36 - Department of Defence (Revised) (26 Jun 2013) Anne Ferris: We are only half way through the year and it is hard to predict at this stage. I understand the out-turns and the Estimates but it is hard to predict the increases or decreases at this stage. It is no reflection on the Minister but it is not an exact science. It cannot be accurate at this stage.

- Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Health: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (2 Jul 2013)
Anne Ferris: Everyone here knows my view on abortion and termination of pregnancies. I am quite public that I am very pro-choice. I have met the women who experienced pregnancies involving fatal foetal abnormalities. I am very committed to seeing the law extended to women who find themselves pregnant from rape or incest and, indeed, for other reasons. I have always held the view that it is a woman's...
