An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Uimh. 3) 2014: An Dara Céim (Atógáil) [Comhaltaí Príobháideacha] - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (No. 3) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (20 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: It is very interesting that we are debating the Sinn Féin proposal to protect a public water supply in the hands of the people during what has perhaps been the most dysfunctional performance by any Government in the history of the State. I stress that it is absolutely dysfunctional, totally uncaring and without any concept of what it means for ordinary decent working class people who...

Leaders' Questions (20 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: It was on "Prime Time".

Written Answers — Department of Health: Drugs Payment Scheme Coverage (20 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: 94. To ask the Minister for Health if he will review the decision not to include the multiple sclerosis drug Fampyra under the drugs payment scheme. [44582/14]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: I thank Mr. Murphy and Dr. Ó Céidigh for their presentations. This was quite a successful year for dairy farmers in particular, as the price was much better than it has been for some time. What jumped out at me in the presentation was that the five largest retail groups have a market share of 93%, the five largest processors produce 91% of milk supplies and 581 producers provide...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2014: Motion (25 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his presentation. I am very conscious of the number of people employed both in the horse sector and the greyhound sector, and the value this has for rural Ireland, as well as the general importance of the greyhound sector to rural Ireland. Something like 24,000 people are employed and the benefit to the economy is difficult to argue against. In the current climate,...

Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: He does not answer questions. He should try to answer the question for once.

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Expenditure (26 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: 89. To ask the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the hardship and consequences of the proposed cut of €44,437.50 to the budget of the Kerry Parents and Friends Association (details supplied); if he will ensure that these cuts are reversed; his views on the future viability of the Kerry Parents and Friends Association; and his further views on the tremendous service...

Merchant Shipping (Registration of Ships) Bill 2013 [Seanad]: Report Stage (27 Nov 2014)

Martin Ferris: I support the amendment. The list of ports contained in the Bill, as put forward by the Government, has diluted the status of other ports which are not included on the list and which have traditional and strong connections to the fishing sector. I would welcome it if boats operating out of Dingle, for example, had the relevant letters included on their registration numbers in order to show...

Health Services: Motion [Private Members] (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: There is an effort by the Government to pretend that the appointment of Deputy Leo Varadkar as Minister for Health will somehow wipe the slate clean of the damage already done by it to the health service. This plan is part of that spin, but, in fact, we can see that some of the measures announced as part of the new national service plan were already announced and that the plan for 2015 is...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Fish Quotas (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: 275. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he will provide details of the State's mackerel quota in tabular form for the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and to date in 2014. [46060/14]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Medical Card Reviews (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: 376. To ask the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Limerick who suffers from multiple sclerosis has not had their discretionary medical card returned despite no change in their financial circumstances and despite their medical needs increasing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45796/14]

Written Answers — Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Údarás na Gaeltachta Properties (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: 619. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the number of units owned by Údaras in the Dingle area, County Kerry, currently unoccupied; the total wage bill for Údaras at its Dingle office; if he will provide in tabular form the grants paid by the Dingle office of Údaras between 1996 and 2006. [46095/14]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forthcoming Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his presentation. I have one question on fisheries. The Minister said he had a meeting with the stakeholders on Wednesday, 26 November. Could we have an update on how the meeting went, if possible? The Minister mentioned mixed organic and conventional farming, recourse to non-organic seed and breeding animals and the control regime. Could he elaborate on that?...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: No, the Minister has not come to it yet. The potential damage to the fishing sector if all these policies are implemented would have a huge social and economic effect on coastal communities, as the Minister mentioned. It would be devastating for many. I make it €89 million if one takes the Hague preferences plus the others. I hope the Minister can-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: We are talking about €70 million in any event. The Minister is also talking about the loss of 500, 600 or 700 jobs.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: It would be a disaster to implement this in full. The social consequences for our coastal communities, as the Minister is well aware, and as all of us from coastal areas are aware, will be significant. It is up to the Minister's negotiators to try to break the Commission's proposals down. We have all argued that the biggest problem for Irish fishermen, particularly those depending on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: I take it the Minister does not accept these proposals and is going out there to try and ensure that-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: There are three Deputies present from two main parties and none of them gives a goddamn about our coastal communities. That is the sad part about it. If it was anything to do with agriculture the place would be full and the Deputies would be sitting up there at the front trying to get in. I just hope the Minister is not accepting this and I hope he plays hard ball with these people.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: The Minister's record is only-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Dec 2014)

Martin Ferris: From all Irish boats?
