- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Nov 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I want to raise an issue that was highlighted on "Prime Time" this week. Indeed, it was highlighted in the Dáil by my colleague, Deputy Cahill, and others. I refer to the lack of service being given by Eir to many people in both urban and rural areas. While it is bad enough not to get one's Internet connection or whatever, there is a far more serious side to this. Many of our elderly...

- Seanad: Reopening Ireland (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment): Statements (26 Nov 2020)
Eugene Murphy: It is fascinating to sit here and listen to every contribution. I am a former Deputy and new to the Seanad. I have to give credit to each of my colleagues. Senator Seery Kearney expressed some anxiety about how we move forward. Senator McDowell seems to be more open to getting things up and running. It is wonderful to hear everybody having a point of view and expressing it honestly....

- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2020: Committee Stage (30 Nov 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I ask the Senator to address his remarks through the Chair. If other Members want to get in, I will accommodate that.We will let Senator Boyhan have his say, by all means. I will stay here all evening if every Member wants to come in. In response to Senator Boyhan, I know it is Committee Stage and that Members have every right to speak for as long as they want, so he can proceed.
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2020: Committee Stage (30 Nov 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I would like to point out to all Members that I will never stifle debate. It is very important that everybody has their say. I wish to be clear on that. We might not have got as much clarification as we got from the last two speakers and from the Minister of State if we did not allow the conversation to continue. I call Senator Boyhan.

- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2020: Committee Stage (30 Nov 2020)
Eugene Murphy: In all fairness, and I know what Senator Boyhan is up to, I can tell him clearly what she said. She said to get on with the debate. That is clearly different to stifling the debate.

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Dec 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I fully endorse the comments of Senator Ó Donnghaile regarding the disappointment we all feel in respect of the appalling death of Pat Finucane. The Senator is correct. The Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and both Houses of the Oireachtas have been snubbed by the British authorities. I do not want to go into all this again, but there is clear evidence of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Dec 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I agree with the sentiments expressed by Senator Fitzpatrick. Every morning that I walk from a hotel to Leinster House, I see people on the streets having slept there overnight and I ask myself why that is with so much money and so many agencies around the city. People down the country who do not like to see people on the streets ask me constantly why they are still there. It is time to...
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (2 Dec 2020)
Eugene Murphy: I agree with much of what Senator Seery Kearney has said. This debate is important and it is very important that everybody states what they think of this Bill. If Members have doubts about certain sections of it, this is the way to have the debate but I do not agree with my good friends on the other side of the House. The provisions in this section will enable further engagement with the...
- Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2020: Report and Final Stages (2 Dec 2020)
Eugene Murphy: The Senator might allow me to make my point. The definition of the word "shall" legally means something must be done as opposed to the term "may", which simply means that something is allowed. In other words, "may" means it can be done but it does not have to be done. Surely the interpretation and legal definition of the word "shall", which is clearly stated in the Bill which provides that...
