Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Catherine McGuinness (19 Jun 2014)

Mary White: It is a great pleasure to have Ms McGuinness in the House. She is a role model for women of all ages in Ireland. As Senator Cáit Keane said, I hope she goes on forever because we need her. She speaks with feeling and passion. There are many politicians who do not speak with passion; we need passion. I was elected to the Seanad in 2002. In 2005 I held public meetings as to how I...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Catherine McGuinness (19 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I just want to ask this question. I find it difficult to listen to all the criticism of the institutions and the way they looked after children. I do not know how a family could have done that to their daughters. Second, I would like to know how the men in Ireland have got away with fathering all these children irresponsibly and who are still doing it without any responsibility.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Catherine McGuinness (19 Jun 2014)

Mary White: -----as a way of getting the men to take responsibility for their children. I am not just speaking about those who have big jobs - barristers, solicitors, doctors and so on. The men of Ireland still do not accept responsibility when they father a child.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Developments in the North-South Co-operation: Discussion with Centre for Cross Border Studies (26 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I thank Ms Taillon. I met her many years ago, in the early 1990s, in my involvement with the Fianna Fáil women's group visiting her in Conway Mill. She has a tremendous reputation for that and I am delighted to meet her again. She is a passionate person. She is obviously committed in her activities to keeping the spirit and realities of cross-Border co-operation alive in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Developments in the North-South Co-operation: Discussion with Centre for Cross Border Studies (26 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I congratulate both Mr. Soares and Mr. Haverty on that most interesting document. It is a pity the people of Ireland would not even know the figures and the reality of the lack of movement, North and South. It is sad. It needs some political driver to make this happen. It is complete nonsense. The figures are so poor. When one considers all the people going back and forth, over to...

Mary White: I also told her how I found the attitude of the British Government in the lack of support to the US Special Envoy, Mr. Haass and Professor O'Sullivan. If that was on the British mainland, they would have had to-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Developments in the North-South Co-operation: Discussion with Centre for Cross Border Studies (26 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I will not hold the Chairman up anymore other than to say that Mr. Haass is a frustrated person at this time and the British Government did not put its shoulder to the process. If it had been in Lancashire or anywhere else, as my colleague, Deputy Smith stated, "in Britain", they would have been far more active and conscious of not resolving the issues on the ground.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Road Network: A5 Working Group (26 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I congratulate Councillor John Campbell on becoming mayor of the fantastic county of Donegal. I convey my best wishes to Councillor Ian McGarvey who is approaching 85 years of age and was a fine chairman of Donegal County Council. He is an example of how older people can succeed and defy the endemic ageism of political life. I support totally what Councillor Dan Kelly said. I have raised...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Road Network: A5 Working Group (26 Jun 2014)

Mary White: I do not care, it must be said. Our former esteemed Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine was involved in the Food Harvest 2020 negotiations and obtained a deal for Ireland in respect of fishing. The current Government is copying what went on in that regard every step of the way. What the hell is holding back progress in respect of the matter to which I refer, particularly in the...
