Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: I move amendment No. 37: In page 30, subsection (1), line 2, to delete “maximum” where it firstly occurs and substitute “national”.It is not a major issue but the amendments sets out that there will be a national fare. It is appropriate that the same fare is in existence across the State and that we enshrine that principle in the legislation.

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Just to clarify, the purpose behind the amendment is to effectively set the price for the provision of the service. Where there is just a maximum, it is open to operators to decide on the price and to set the price for a journey at whatever level they choose. That poses problems whereby some people ignore the rules and regulations, ply for trade for a relatively short period of time,...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: I support the amendment. I, too, have been contacted by people who are licensed and who have concerns about people who are hiring cars out from showrooms, particularly for weddings and graduations. The Minister should be careful about funerals and hearses. We want to ensure we do not cause any difficulties there.

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Very good.

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Clarity from the Minister and his Department is always welcome so we could not but accept them.

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: It is right to bring forward this amendment. There was some considerable concern about the impact the legislation would have had on community groups referred to by the Minister of State. We will therefore certainly be supporting this amendment.

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Amendment No. 96 is about providing the same level of representation. Tiománaí Tacsaí na hÉireann believes it represents a large number of individual taxi drivers but has not been part of the consultation process to the extent it could have been. If the Minister of State could give some comfort to individual taxi drivers as to how their voices will be heard, then I will...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (25 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Will the Minister of State consider submitting a draft list of appointments to the advisory committee to the transport committee prior to their confirmation?

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: FÁS Local Training Initiatives Places (26 Sep 2013)

Timmy Dooley: 98. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason a person (details supplied) in County Clare is only receiving a portion of their training allowance while participating on a FÁS course; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [40230/13]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Aviation Issues (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: 57. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the actions he has taken in relation to the allegations aired on Channel 4's "Dispatches" programme entitled "Ryanair: Secrets from the Cockpit". [41061/13]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Aviation Issues (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: The Minister's reply does not adequately address the concerns arising from the allegations set out in this programme. Where any question is raised in regard to passenger safety there will inevitably be concern. Another cause for concern is the potential reputational damage to the airline in question as a result of the charges made against it. I assumed the Minister would have initiated...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Aviation Issues (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: The Minister is not putting anything new into the public domain. The question I asked was what actions the Minister had taken, not what the IAA had done. I am satisfied with the actions and the approach of the IAA. Has the Minister met or sought to meet the IAA as a result of the allegations made? They are extremely serious allegations. If they are proven untrue, there is potential...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Public Transport Provision (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: 60. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his plans to privatise certain public transport routes; how this will improve services to commuters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [41062/13]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Public Transport Provision (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: The most obvious question is whether this is the beginning of the privatisation of public transport in the State. The Minister is on record as showing some level of favour towards that particular process. I remind the Minister that during the course of a recent and ongoing dispute between Dublin Bus workers and management, a Labour Party Minister indicated that the announcement by the NTA...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Public Transport Provision (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: The Minister is aware that allegations are being made about the inability of transport regulators to govern the way in which employees in private companies would be treated by way of wage agreements or the way in which they are expected to work. It is the case in other jurisdictions that where there is a drive towards profit by private companies that win contracts, there has been a...

Other Questions: Job Creation (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Does the Minister of State want to put his foot down and talk to the Taoiseach?

Other Questions: State Airports (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: The Minister's Government went ahead with the dismantling of the Shannon company. Unfortunately, when he separated out Shannon, the Minister made very significant promises about putting in place a new company that would incorporate the airport and SFADCo. While most of the employees have been transferred out of SFADCo, some still remain. That organisation is no longer in a position to...

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: Fianna Fáil broadly welcomes the Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill and will support its provisions. It will also be bringing forward amendments to strengthen road traffic legislation even further. Our amendments would crack down on hit and run drivers by introducing tougher penalties and extending the powers of arrest of gardaí. I will outline these provisions on Committee Stage. They...

Leaders' Questions (2 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: That is why the Government amended legislation to make it easier for repossessions.

Leaders' Questions (2 Oct 2013)

Timmy Dooley: I am just helping the Taoiseach in answering the question.
