Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Let us say one is trying to teach French. If one took a French textbook and translated it into English as an English-speaking teacher one would say it does not hit the spot. It is the same for Irish speakers who have Irish as their first language. Something that is generated initially as Gaeilge from the cultural background of the Irish language is quite different from a translation.
