EU Summits. (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Does the Taoiseach accept that a common tax base is a priority objective of the European Commission and that this priority is supported by the majority of member states, including the big players of France and Germany? Is it the case that as part of the strategy of the President of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to progress a common tax base he shelved this proposal until after...

EU Summits. (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I know it is the final sitting day before Christmas but the Taoiseach will have to dream on.

EU Summits. (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I am a little confused by the Taoiseach's first response. Perhaps he will offer some clarification. There is no question that the ceding of tax sovereignty would have very serious consequences for the State. While the Taoiseach indicated he and Commission President, Mr. Barroso, shared a broad outlook on this issue, that is not my understanding of Mr. Barroso's stance on the common tax...

Order of Business (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: As with earlier speakers, I have no issue with the appointment of former Deputy Michael Smith and wish him well if that appointment is to proceed. My issue is a different one. My issue with...

Order of Business (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I refer to the matter raised by Deputy Kenny. Having heard the Taoiseach's response, there are still concerns about the enhanced proposition relating to the community child care subvention scheme. I welcome the expansion by the Minister of State, Deputy Brendan Smith, of the various tiers and the supports under same. I noted this morning's welcome by the community child care sector of the...

Order of Business (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It is in order.

Order of Business (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: We need to know the detail because people are continuing to lobby and ask pertinent questions. The key issue is if the threshold is too low, it will simply not make sufficient difference and many people will continue to suffer in 2008. I ask the Minister of State, the Taoiseach and the Government to listen to those who are lobbying for improvements in this area.

European Council: Statements (19 Dec 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I join colleagues in extending the greetings of the season to all Members of the Dáil and the Seanad. I extend Christmas greetings to the Taoiseach, his colleagues in Government, the component parties and Independent members of the Government. I extend the season's greetings to Deputy Kenny and the Fine Gael Party. I hope I did not note any glee on the part of Deputy Kenny in mentioning...
