John Gilroy: It is not a banking treaty.

Seanad: Thirtieth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (24 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: I do not deny that.

Seanad: Thirtieth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (24 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: That was a nasty thing to say.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: Senator Daly can ask her then.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (30 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: No one in the Chamber would disagree with the necessity for a stimulus package for the economy. I agree with Senator Darragh O'Brien and I like his thinking in this regard. It would be both good and innovative to invest a limited amount of Irish pension funds, which at present are valued at €77 billion, in infrastructural projects. The State is the only agency that can capture the value...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (30 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: The Labour Party Members were merely quoting industry sources and best practice, which would surprise Sinn Féin enormously.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (30 Apr 2012)

John Gilroy: We will be back in the markets in less than one year.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

John Gilroy: Will the Senator please give the full quotation?

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

John Gilroy: In recent months I have noticed an increasing tendency among Deputies, particularly, Government backbench Deputies, to voice critical comment about this House, the tenure of which is that it should be abolished. It is undesirable that we would enter into a controversy on the matter with the Lower House but a response is required. I am happy to engage in any debate on the future of the House...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

John Gilroy: That is right, we are not discussing the other House. We are merely being helpful in moving forward the debate.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

John Gilroy: There is also the Leaders' allowance and, perhaps, that could be looked at. I am puzzled at the different pay rates for Deputies and Senators. A Deputy earns €27,000 more than a Senator, yet the Seanad sits the same number of hours, sit on the same committees and passes the same legislation.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

John Gilroy: The public would consider Senators and Deputies to do primarily the same work in the constituencies. In future, when we hear Government backbenchers calling for the abolition of the House, I suggest they first reflect on reforming their own House. They can then come back to us and give us the argument and, perhaps, we will listen to them.

Seanad: Protection of Children's Health from Tobacco Smoke Bill 2012: Second Stage (9 May 2012)

John Gilroy: With the agreement of the House, I will share my time with Senator Mary Moran.

Seanad: Protection of Children's Health from Tobacco Smoke Bill 2012: Second Stage (9 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister to the House. I welcome the introduction of the Bill, which is a meaningful function and demonstrates how the House can work effectively. It also points to the wisdom of our Constitution in allowing an acknowledged expert, like Senator Crown, to have an input in the policy-making and legislative processes of the Oireachtas. While some people would complain about what...

Seanad: EU Presidency: Statements, Questions and Answers (Resumed) (10 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I wish to share my time with Senator Harte.

Seanad: EU Presidency: Statements, Questions and Answers (Resumed) (10 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister to the House. The chance to hold the Presidency of the EU offers Ireland a wonderful opportunity at this most trying of economic times. I was very interested to hear much of what the Minister of State said recently, especially the comment that holding the Presidency offers a chance to demonstrate that Ireland is a constructive and committed member of the Union and...

Seanad: Mortgage Arrears: Statements, Questions and Answers (15 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister of State. Senator Hayden offered an interesting opinion on the setting up of an independent agency that might take some of the debt unto itself, manage it and work it out. I would be interested to hear the Minister of State's opinion on how such an agency might sit when juxtaposed with any proposed management of the tracker mortgage issue, which might involve the...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I ask the Deputy Leader to facilitate a discussion on suicide prevention. I acknowledge that we have debated the issue recently but the Seanad should give a high political priority to this most pressing of issues. Suicide is probably the greatest single issue facing our society and we need to put it near the top of our agenda. The Joint Committee on Health and Children has appointed me...

Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Cooperation and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (17 May 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome this opportunity to speak on the fiscal treaty referendum which will be the most important vote for our country in a generation. There are two main reasons we should consider voting "Yes" and be actively canvassing for it. The first is to demonstrate our commitment to the European project, which promotes certainty and stability across the eurozone. We will benefit from that. The...

Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Cooperation and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (17 May 2012)

John Gilroy: We cannot.
