Paschal Mooney: Is that not an extraordinary piece of information?

Seanad: Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Bill 2002: Committee Stage. (13 Oct 2004)

Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: Before taking the motion, I would like to extend a hearty céad míle fáilte on behalf of the House to the newly promoted Minister of State, Deputy Seán Power. It is a great privilege and pleasure to have him here for the first time in his capacity as a Minister of State. I wish him well.

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: The world is once again experiencing an emotional rollercoaster. We have been down this road before with the abduction of Mr. Ken Bigley. All one can hope for is that Ms Margaret Hassan has not been abducted by the most extreme elements of Islamic fundamentalism. I ask that the Leader support the efforts of the Taoiseach and Government in matters relating to the abduction of this Irish born...

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: As somebody who opposed the war and who is on the record of this House as having opposed US unilateralism——

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: I ask those heckling me to offer, for once, a solution to what is happening in Iraq. Are they seriously suggesting that there should be a total withdrawal of forces from Iraq so the country, which has already descended into anarchy and chaos, would be a basket case? What are they suggesting?

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: What are they proposing?

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: I was going to make the point, as stated by my colleague, that we should support the United Nations. We are constantly hearing in this House about the importance of the United Nations.

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: The United Nations has mandated this but what is happening is that countries are standing back and not getting involved in the reconstruction of Iraq for security reasons. The UN had to pull out, as did most of the multi-national agencies. There is a real crisis on the ground in Iraq. It does not help the debate towards a viable and free Iraq to constantly hark back to what happened 18 months...

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: I do not wish to get lost in the verbiage here. I ask the Leader, given her sympathies in this regard as a woman and political leader, to ensure we give our full support to the Taoiseach and Government in trying to secure the freedom of Ms Hassan. I am sad to say——

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (20 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: That is not true.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: Why do I always end up following comments like that in the House? I support Senator Ó Murchú's comments and I believe the situation in which Christy Moore found himself is indicative of what seems to be happening in the civil and human rights area. Cat Stevens, an equally well known international singer, was deported from America for alleged and unproven funding of terrorist-related...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: While I fully support the right of the media to bring all of us to account, I believe — I am sure the Leader agrees — it has an equal obligation to report on the parliamentary activities of all elected Members rather than merely focusing on the sexy issues such as whether we stay in three or four star hotels.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Oct 2004)

Paschal Mooney: A Chathaoirligh, are you thwarting a blossoming romance?
