Discretionary Medical Cards: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 May 2014)

Martin Ferris: It seems that nowadays I stand up here more often to talk to, and even plead with, Ministers about the distress I see in my constituency and the people who approach me for help. The single, clear message coming from this Government is that if one is in trouble, one is on one's own. If one's mother needs care, if one's child has special needs, if one has lost one's job, if one has an...

Local and Community Development Programmes: Motion [Private Members] (4 Jun 2014)

Martin Ferris: Once again, I find myself in this Chamber challenging the Fine Gael-Labour Party coalition on its lack of consultation and erosion of democracy. This time we are talking about local development companies and the privatisation of the community sector. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture and Fisheries Councils and Report on Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (10 Jun 2014)

Martin Ferris: All of us share concerns about the abolition of the milk quota and the effect this will have if it does not work out to plan for people who have made large investments in preparation for it, such as expansion or intensification of production. The Minister's presentation makes clear the divisions between the big powers, with Britain, France, Spain and Sweden on one side and Germany on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture and Fisheries Councils and Report on Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (10 Jun 2014)

Martin Ferris: Is it fair to state the concerns regarding supply control are determined by the market value of the produce? Many people are concerned that an increase in production will mean the price will drop. At present milk prices are very good at 38 cent or 39 cent a litre, but just over a year ago the price was 23 cent or 24 cent a litre. Huge investment has been made on the island with regard to...

Martin Ferris: I welcome the fact that the Minister has taken on board many of the recommendations. This is a positive aspect of the debate between the joint committee and the Minister and his officials. The Minister stated he will increase the pot limit from 50 to 200 for boats of less than 12 m. in length and from 100 to 250 for boats of more than 12 m. in length. What is the expiry date for the scheme?

While they lost their pots, they do not have receipts for them. One man from west Cork lost more than 300 pots and his entire business as a consequence. Is an alternative available? For example, would proof that they had...
