Paul Coghlan: We are all respectful democrats in this House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I wanted to refer to the contribution of my good friend and colleague, Senator Darragh O'Brien. I thought his endeavours to appear overexcited were rather pained or strained. Perhaps he has not had the practice that some of his other colleagues behind him have had at the Abbey school of acting. Nevertheless, he and the House should be assured-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: -----that the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste are ad idem on some of the matters to which he referred. As I have often preached in this House, and in regard to Senator Norris' excitement on the other issue, let us be calm and, in Senator Darragh O'Brien's instance, await Cabinet discussion and decision because nothing has changed.

- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I am sure the Leader will agree with me that there are signs of confidence slowly creeping back in, especially in respect of house prices, to which Senator Bacik referred. I accept the increase has been tiny and marginal and that we would want to wait another two periods at least. The point is that we should be calm and measured and should not be getting overexcited needlessly.

- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Perhaps I do not mix in the right social circles either or travel through the wrong railway stations. Perhaps it is simply my macular oedema but I have not seen the so-called offensive advertisements yet and neither, as Senator Norris will know well, am I going to bully, try to bully or try to colonise-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I thank the Senator and I appreciate his comment. Like the rest of the Senators I find abortion abhorrent. Like the rest of the Members, I condemn forced abortions in China and wherever else they take place. We are all anti killing and the taking of life, so I would expect, as has been said in the Chamber, that any debate on the subject would be reasonable and rational. Personally, I...

- Seanad: National Cultural Institutions: Motion (27 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister to the House for this important debate. It is part of our make-up and psyche that we all share such an enthusiasm for the arts. Our cultural institutions are of major importance to our national heritage. I have great time for the Independent Senators and salute everything Senator Fiach Mac Conghail has done in the Abbey Theatre. The Abbey has put on great shows over...
- Seanad: National Cultural Institutions: Motion (27 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I am sure the Senator did. I must apologise to the Senator as I missed the beginning of his contribution. There was something of a cock-up with regard to the starting time but perhaps that was my fault. It certainly was not that of the Senator. I have no doubt the Senator made some good points. However, I revert to basics. I do not wish to labour this point because the Minister's heart...
- Seanad: National Cultural Institutions: Motion (27 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: That point is very much respected.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Senator MacSharry's concern for distressed home owners is understandable and is shared by everyone on all sides of the House. I remind him that the Bill to be published tomorrow is a Dáil Bill. Although I appreciate his comments, he might need to discuss the timing of its passage with his party's Whip in the Lower House. A number of its measures to assist people in distress are welcome....
