- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: That is key. The full removal of the mesh seems to be the optimal solution but it is how to get there that is problem. We do not have the skill set in this country to do it. Women have no confidence when it comes to engaging with the current system-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: ----- so that needs to be changed radically. What type of engagement occurred with the two groups in setting up the current pathways? Was there any engagement with the HSE?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: Would any of the groups have met with the Minister for Health?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: Obviously the groups would like to meet with the Minister. In her opening statement, Ms Martin outlined eight or nine different issues that need to be addressed and Ms McLaughlin outlined those as well. We have moved on and have come through a pandemic as well so it is time to refresh what was there, upgrade it and make it fit for purpose for women. Obviously the system is not working.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: Deputy Shortall mentioned the collaboration between Scotland and St. Louis. Would the groups have confidence in this option if the medical people from St. Louis had a clinic or presence in Ireland to carry out these type of surgeries involving the full removal?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)
Joe Carey: I welcome all the witnesses and thank them for this really positive engagement. I compliment both groups for their campaign on this issue. It was brought to my attention recently by a constituent whose life was turned upside down. To have that conversation with that lady and understand what she has gone through is unbelievable. It is life-changing. Ms Jackson said earlier that when she...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Charities (Amendment) Bill 2022: Discussion (6 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: I want to convey my condolences to the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, on his recent bereavement. Is there any aspect in the Bill that would deal with streamlining the process whereby groups can apply for charitable status? There would seem to be some inordinate delays associated with the processing of applications to become a charitable company. Is there any aspect of the Bill that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (13 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: I support the proposal put forward by Senator Buttimer. I commend him on raising this issue. The email he read out encapsulates the issue. What is happening is totally unacceptable. Aer Lingus is in receipt of State funding. It has been supported throughout Covid-19. It is in receipt of funding directly from the State to reinstate routes as opposed to discontinuing them. It is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: I thank our guests. It is a very worthwhile meeting. I return to the mandated cap in Heathrow and the impact that is having, especially on Shannon Airport. As I understand it, we have 23 different slots that Aer Lingus holds for use in Heathrow. Is that correct? How many of those slots are allocated to Shannon?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: Okay. How does Aer Lingus decide which route it chops on a particular day? How does it decided whether it is Dublin, Cork or Shannon?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: Is Mr. Moriarty able to give figures in that regard?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: As a representative of County Clare and the region, I can say that this has a disproportionate impact on Shannon. We have fewer flights, as Mr. Moriarty will understand. Dublin is taking the biggest hit, followed by Cork and then Shannon, but it is our lifeline to the world. It is our connection to the massive hub that is Heathrow. When that is removed or disrupted in any way it has an...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: That is very encouraging. We mentioned next June. Aviation has undergone a significant and welcome resurgence, and we are dealing with the fallout of that such as cancelled flights, lost bags, and whatever else, which we have been discussing today. On the region I represent, Mr. Moriarty has given strong assurances that it makes sense commercially to have a strong presence between Shannon...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: Ms Embleton mentioned that Aer Lingus has aircraft on order and that it wants to increase capacity, which is very welcome. Given the problems experienced by Aer Lingus passengers at Dublin Airport due to the loss of bags and cancelled flights, and with the sheer capacity that is in Shannon and other airports as well as the convenience afforded to the passenger, are there plans to improve or...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: Prior to Covid, plans were in place to add Barcelona and Paris to the schedule in Shannon. Are those services being looked at again?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: In terms of the disruption, many people say to me that Aer Lingus has cancelled a lot of flights. Ryanair has not done so. Aer Lingus and Ryanair are the two big carriers. Some people who have worked with Aer Lingus in the mid-west region say that many of these flights were cancelled because Aer Lingus simply does not have the staff. Covid is being blamed, but some of the workers within...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: I know Aer Lingus chopped the base in Shannon. There were 82 people working there. I know that about 31 of them managed to transfer to Dublin. Has that had an impact on the decision of Aer Lingus to cancel flights?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: How many people were employed by Aer Lingus in 2019 and how many are employed by it now? What is the breakdown across the staff cohorts?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation at Dublin Airport: Discussion (26 Jul 2022)
Joe Carey: Aer Lingus has 91% of the number of people it used to have.
