Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Long Wave Radio Transmission: RTE (15 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: I thank the witnesses for attending and answering the question. Many people were caught on the blind side by it and we were reacting to the communications we received a week ago. Today we were all trying to find a solution that might allow the problem to go away, if possible. I welcome the window given and it should be used for the consultation with and education of people and to see if it...

John O'Mahony: The purpose of this meeting is to engage with Inland Fisheries Ireland to discuss issues relating to the depletion of fish stocks in inland waterways, including the prevalence of poaching in estuaries. On behalf of the committee, I welcome Dr. Ciaran Byrne, Dr. Greg Forde and Dr. Cathal Gallagher of Inland Fisheries Ireland. I draw their attention to the fact that, by virtue of section...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Depletion of Inland Fish Stocks and Impact of Estuary Poaching: Inland Fisheries Ireland (22 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: There is a need for a referee then.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Depletion of Inland Fish Stocks and Impact of Estuary Poaching: Inland Fisheries Ireland (22 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: I represent the Mayo constituency and I will be parochial, as some members have been on other occasions. We have many important inland fisheries in my county, including the River Moy and Lough Mask. Ballina is the salmon capital of Ireland, if not Europe. Fisheries protection was referred to. I understand that in 2010, because of the moratorium on public service recruitment, all the...

Irish Water: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (23 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: This is another legacy issue the Government has had to address to make up for the massive under-investment in water services under successive Governments.

Irish Water: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (23 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: Everyone accepts that the manner in which water charges have been rolled out has caused confusion and fear, which has been exacerbated by the inability of people to contact Irish Water to get logical answers. The staff at the end of the telephone line do not seem to be equipped to provide answers to those who want to pay for their water. This is a rehash, albeit on a more massive scale, of...

Irish Water: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (23 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: There is a need for greater clarity and efficiency. The best way forward is the introduction of a flat rate or fixed charge until such time as all meters have been installed. That is the solution and it would provide certainty. Most people accept that water charges are necessary. This matter has been turned into a political football. As a result of under-investment in this area by...

Order of Business (23 Oct 2014)

John O'Mahony: I wish to inquire about the broadcasting (amendment) Bill, which is to amend the Broadcasting Act 2009. It is to deal with the funding of public broadcasting over the next five years and replace the television licence with the broadcasting charge. It is supposed to be introduced in 2015. Could the Tánaiste indicate when in 2015 it will be introduced?

Topical Issue Debate: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Administration (4 Nov 2014)

John O'Mahony: I do not know how I will follow that.

Topical Issue Debate: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Administration (4 Nov 2014)

John O'Mahony: This is an issue for all Deputies in the House. It is a very good scheme, but it is a major issue for families with elderly parents waiting on the list, some of whom have taken out loans to pay €800 or €1,200 in some parts of the country. Last February, the waiting time was four weeks and it has grown rapidly to 16 weeks. The health service plan is coming out in the next few...

Topical Issue Debate: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Administration (4 Nov 2014)

John O'Mahony: I thank the Minister of State for her explanation and I am glad to hear there is a plan. We will all watch it very closely. The key point is that the system is capped but demand is increasing. Will the 2015 allocation, in addition to the measures mentioned by the Minister of State, reflect the increasing demand that is evident each month?
