- Seanad: Local Economic Initiatives: Motion (4 Mar 2009)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State and the opportunity to say a few words on this debate. Like Senator Phelan, I see merit in both the motion and the amendment. I do not have any great problem with either because I support aspects of both. On the issue of credit unions, the credit union in my area, in Castlebar, is very well run and I compliment it on the work it is doing in the Castlebar...

- Seanad: Investment of the National Pensions Reserve Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2009)
Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister back to the House and am glad to have the opportunity to speak on this issue. I support the recapitalisation of the banks. It is proper and fair that we have a strong banking sector. We need banks that will go down the road with a person who is willing to take a chance. Thus, we need strong banks and we need them to take chances on people. After all, self-employed...

- Seanad: Investment of the National Pensions Reserve Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2009: Committee Stage (5 Mar 2009)
Paddy Burke: I wish to follow up Senator Twomey's point about the Government not having a hands-on approach to the banks. Is it the case that the Government's position is compromised? On the one hand, it is investing â¬7 billion of taxpayers' money in AIB and Bank of Ireland while, on the other hand, it has its own bank, Anglo Irish Bank. As Senator Twomey said, it is not taking a hands-on approach...
- Seanad: Investment of the National Pensions Reserve Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2009: Committee Stage (5 Mar 2009)
Paddy Burke: I support Senator Twomey's amendment. The funding allocated to the banks should be capped at â¬7 billion and if the banks require further funding, the Government should seek the approval of the Oireachtas. Senator Ross raised an important question. Is there any point in borrowing â¬1 billion or â¬1.5 billion annually to be allocated to the managed fund? If, as Senator Ross stated, this...

Paddy Burke: It was â¬1.4 billion or â¬1.6 billion.
- Seanad: Investment of the National Pensions Reserve Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2009: Committee Stage (5 Mar 2009)
Paddy Burke: Senator Ross makes perfect sense. The rate at which this country can borrow has increased dramatically in recent months. It does not make sense to borrow â¬1.6 billion at a very high rate when we do not need to do so. I cannot understand why the Minister of State is getting hot and bothered about the matter when he should be proposing it to his senior Minister and the Government.
