Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: I knew there were concerns but I will leave today hugely concerned, especially about enterprise. There are two specific issues; funding is number one, and number two is what has been hammered home to us, that the current major scheme is not fit for purpose. If something was not fit for purpose in a business that we were all involved in, it would not be there, so why is the Government trying...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Oct 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: I thank Mr. McDonnell and everybody here today for their contributions. It has been very useful and interesting. When we come to consider our draft report, we will make sure as much as possible of this is included. I emphasise again that we would like the witnesses' organisations to send us a bit of back-up and solutions. Based on what Mr. O'Meara was saying, I think the solution is there.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Hospital Waiting Lists (2 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: I need an update on behalf of the people of Gorey on the new ambulance station and the primary healthcare centre. For too long, Gorey has waited on this issue. Gorey is one of the fastest-growing towns in Ireland. Come summertime, an extra 40,000 people move in between Courtown, Castletown, Ballymoney and these areas. We just do not have the medical infrastructure to cater for these...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: I thank the witnesses for their opening statements. I come from a hospitality background. In my previous life, I had up to 600 people working in the Leinster area. I had a very simple synopsis of business. We had the front door that was getting sales, the back door for organising the costs and then the uncontrollables. On the front door, Ms Burke might be surprised that I want to focus...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: Do not get me wrong; there are huge positives in terms of football games and concerts, and Dublin is doing them well, but the problem is that they are very limited. Fridays and Saturdays are booming but, as a former hotelier, I know people still have to pay the bills, the head chef and so forth on a Monday and Tuesday. That relates to what I saw when I walked home last night. Mr. Talbot...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Competitiveness and the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Oct 2025)

Brian Brennan: I have taken three words from today, those being, "infrastructure", "costs" and "delivery". I will take a local example of each of those. On infrastructure, I spoke to an owner of the leading factory in Gorey. He is now of the opinion that he might have to leave Gorey because people are waiting for planning permission for a roundabout. It is the time and uncertainty that is killing him. ...
