- Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Accommodation Provision (6 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: It is very good news that the Minister has issued approval in principle for the additional temporary accommodation.I take his point that a site for a new school building is being actively pursued but I put it to him that this should be a matter of urgency because the enrolment figures for the primary schools in the town of Rush show that next year there will be a similar level of demand. It...
- Seanad: Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill 2017: Second Stage (7 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I echo Senator Ardagh's comments. I thank the Social Democrats for bringing this Bill to the Dáil. It is a very simple Bill. It will not cost the State anything but it will mean much to hundreds of thousands of families around the country. It is imperative that the Government runs with this and enacts the legislation as soon as possible because so many people depend on it. Like...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister of State for coming in today to take this Commencement matter on behalf of the Minister for Health. I understand that an emergency meeting of the Cabinet is taking place due to Brexit so I appreciate that the Minister for Health could not be here.I want to raise the issue of VARIVAX. It is a vaccine for chickenpox and is not part of the national childhood immunisation...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister of State very much but my question was not really answered. I understand that the MenB vaccine was included. I had a child in 2014 and she did not get the MenB vaccination, while my child born in 2018 did. I realise that it is under constant review but I really want the Minister to suggest to the NIAC that it undertake a study on the feasibility of adding the VARIVAX...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: It is a great honour for me to take the Order of Business today on my appointment as deputy leader of the Fianna Fáil group in the Seanad. I look forward to taking it many times in the future and perhaps doing battle with the Leader opposite me. I wish to refer to the protests that are going on throughout the country today and tomorrow in solidarity with the 17 year old girl who was...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: It is not under proceedings. A verdict has been delivered.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: If I can continue, Ms Elizabeth O'Connell, senior counsel, said: "Does the evidence out-rule the possibility that she was attracted to the defendant and was open to meeting someone and being with someone?". She went on to say: "You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front." Those words were uttered in that trial and they are uttered in trials...

- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I do not think we have a quorum in the Chamber and I would like to call a quorum. This is a very important point and it deserves an audience.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I wish to add to the point made by Senator Humphreys. There has certainly been an inconsistent approach with regard to how Senator Bacik has been treated. It is bordering on misogynistic. I call on the Minister to reflect on his comments towards Senator Bacik and issue an apology.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I did not say the Leas-Chathaoirleach did. I am pointing out the inconsistency-----
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I am not, but there is an inconsistency in the approach, and a degree of leeway is given to certain Members of this House that was not given to Senator Bacik when she was debating her point.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: It is an important point to make at this point in the debate. I did not think it was very fair when she was interrupted while making her point. There is an inconsistent approach in how some Members of this House are treated.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I was not making reference to the Leas-Chathaoirleach.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: If the Minister is going to make accusations, it is very curious that he would make them when a female Member of this House is speaking.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I have been here for the majority of the 38 hours to which the Minister referred.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: If the Minister was going to make such a point, he could have done so on many another occasion. I find it very curious that he makes it today when Senator Bacik is speaking on this point. I am not happy to sit here and witness this and I would like the Minister to give an apology to Senator Bacik and to this House.
- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (20 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I support Senator Boyhan. He referred to this Bill as a mess. One might also refer to it as a dog's dinner. Other people have done so. This House has a wealth of experience that the Lower House does not possess. We have a former Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Equality. Senator Norris has substantial experience in the House. We are much the better for having somebody with...
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Nov 2018)
Lorraine Clifford Lee: I raise the very serious issue of sports capital grants, as discussed in the media this morning. There are shocking reports that senior Ministers and figures in the Fine Gael Government lobbied extensively for the allocation of sports capital funds to private golf clubs in their constituencies. The sports capital programme is primarily designed to fund local sports groups and clubs with a...
