Seanad: Special Olympics Ireland: Motion (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: Thank you. I have not politicised this. I certainly did not invite representatives of Special Olympics Ireland in here to hear an argument. This is a good day to reflect, ten years after the Special Olympics, to see how the movement has grown, even with less resources. We could turn around and say that there have been cuts since 2008. Who was in power in 2008? We can turn it around....

Seanad: Special Olympics Ireland: Motion (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I would like to thank Peter O'Brien from Special Olympics Ireland, and would like to thank Jim and James for coming in. I sincerely hope that this debate will lead to more people becoming volunteers in the Special Olympics, that it will make more people go to a local community event, that they will become involved, and that they will see the excellent work that is being done with the Special...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Disability Allowance Appeals (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Perry, for coming here to answer my Adjournment matter. Can he explain the long delay in dealing with appeals for the disability allowance? I made inquiries and have been told that over 300 people have had to wait over a year for a decision on their appeal. Also, 4,169 appeals were heard last year but 2,513 of those people had waited over four months....

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Disability Allowance Appeals (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State for his comments. I noted that the present waiting time for disability allowance is seven weeks but I asked about appeals. The other day a member of the Department informed me, on the telephone, that staff are now examining the backlog of appeals that date back to November. However, I have taken the positive message from the Minister's statement that...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Disability Allowance Appeals (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I agree.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Disability Allowance Appeals (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I agree with the Minister of State. I welcome the improvements and hope it continues.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I have raised the issue with the Minister of the number of retired teachers taking over jobs, be it on a part-time basis, for a short time or for a long time. I do not see why schools have full autonomy when the Department pays all the salaries. I appreciate the Minister's work in the area, and when these teachers do take up posts their salaries are at the bottom of the scale, but when we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I agree, and many retired teachers start a very successful new career, but it is wrong for retired teachers in receipt of a pension to return to the same school they left or a neighbouring school.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I know of newly qualified teachers who have been offered two or three hours in schools, only to find other substitutes are already there when they arrive. It is futile.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: May I ask a supplementary question? It may have been covered already. I apologise, as I needed to leave. It relates to the pupil-teacher ratio in private secondary schools.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I was wondering. Does the Minister propose further changes?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I have received several representations from Protestant schools and the committee received a briefing recently. Parents have told me of people’s presumption that, since their children attend private schools, they are wealthy or that money is not an issue for them. The school that I have in mind is in Dundalk, is a fee paying boarding school with a Protestant ethos and has a wide...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I am not trying to suggest that.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: I, too, welcome the announcement made yesterday by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Alan Shatter, and the Minister of State, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, on the publication of the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Bill, for which I have called on many occasions in the past two years. It will replace the wards of court system with a legal framework to support people in exercising...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: On a point of order, it was insulting to all the women here.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: That is the Senator's opinion. We must all respect each other's opinions.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

Mary Moran: On a point of order, I do not know where this is going. I ask that the Leader or the Cathaoirleach would adjourn the Seanad for five minutes for Members to take stock.
