Topical Issue Debate: Health Screening (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for selecting this topical issue as it is one that must be dealt with the greatest urgency. The Irish Heart Foundation has been running a campaign to safeguard Guthrie cards over ten years old which are scheduled to be destroyed by 31 March. These cards, which number nearly one million, are very important as they contain priceless genetic information, including...

Topical Issue Debate: Health Screening (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I thank the Minister of State for her response. She is correct that the Red C poll shows that only 12% of the population are aware that the cards are to be destroyed. This is a telling statistic which is a reason for the deadline to be extended. The importance of these cards cannot be overestimated. Information supplied by the Irish Heart Foundation today states that the Dutch Parliament...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I thank the deputation for coming in today. Smuggling is a problem and I have spoken to some of the witnesses before about it. I can see where the problem is for retailers, particularly small ones. They are having a tough enough time competing against larger outlets, particularly on main streets in small towns and villages. Ms Drennan mentioned the ban on the display of cigarettes, but I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I am always trying to give them up. At the same time, however, I work closely with the Irish Heart Foundation and the Irish Cancer Society because I am of an age to know what damage they are doing and how many people they are killing. All members are acquainted with people who have died as a result of smoking. The point about customs trying to go after the people who are smuggling is well...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: That is outrageous and such fines certainly should be bigger for anyone caught selling cigarettes illegally. I wish to ask Ms Drennan one question. She mentioned the question of people going on holidays and bringing back cigarettes but is it not the case that one can only bring back 200 cigarettes or one must pay the customs duty if one is caught at the airport? While I believe Ms Drennan...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I do not believe that is the case because the sky shopping magazine on Aer Lingus flights states clearly that 200 cigarettes per person can be brought in. This always has been my understanding.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: One is not allowed to smoke on the aeroplane.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: Can Mr. Sweeney indicate where the cigarettes are coming from in the main?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: As one obviously would not go to so much trouble unless it was highly lucrative, it is a huge problem.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: May I ask one last question?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I thank the Chairman for his indulgence, which I appreciate. Are the witnesses aware of retailers in Ireland that are taking in such illegal cigarettes and selling them? I have heard anecdotally that there are shops in certain parts of the country in which one can buy the cigarettes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Black Market: Discussion with National Federation of Retail Newsagents (13 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I am talking about cigarettes which are being brought into shops that are sold for €9.20 as a normal packet of cigarettes that one would not know are counterfeit.

Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions) Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (14 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: I welcome the opportunity to speak about this very progressive legislation. The Bill is one which, when enacted, will allow those who have made mistakes in the past the opportunity to move on with their lives. Last week, as Vice Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality, I visited Midtown Community Court in New York, which deals specifically with citizens...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Data Protection (20 Mar 2013)

Anne Ferris: To ask the Minister for Health in view of the recent polling that indicates that the vast majority of the public is unaware of the impending destruction of Guthrie cards, if he will reconsider disposing of them; if the issue could be re-examined in view of the fact that the generic diagnosis issue was not addressed in the policy review; if the issue will be addressed in the context of the...

Anne Ferris: To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs when the Children First legislation will be published; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15775/13]
