Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Mar 2003)

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Mar 2003)

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: Not mine.

Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: Yes. I accept that the Leader is arranging for a debate tomorrow but it would be more relevant to the people who will be injured or killed, and the Irish people, if we had it today. Amendment put: "That No. 25 be substituted for No. 1." Tá

Seanad: Request to Move Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: I ask that the House be adjourned under the terms of Standing Order 29 to debate an urgent matter, namely, the Anglo-American attack on the state of Iraq.

Seanad: Request to Move Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: I thank you, a Chathaoirligh, for your ruling. This demonstrates the glorious absurdity of all such rulings, not just yours but those in the tradition of the House.

Seanad: Request to Move Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: If you do not consider a war against Iraq that involves this State to be a matter of urgency, then I do not know what is.

Seanad: Request to Move Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: Perhaps if war were declared on Ireland, you would give a similar ruling, a Chathaoirligh, so that the people could be reconciled to it.

Seanad: Tributes to Deputy Head Usher of the Houses of the Oireachtas. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: The Senator is still the same.

Seanad: Tributes to Deputy Head Usher of the Houses of the Oireachtas. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: It is unusual for somebody who is not a leader to be allowed to speak and I am grateful for the opportunity. I usually deprecate these tributes, often to a long-lost Member of the House, as I have always felt that we waste an enormous amount of time in clichés and platitudes and that there is a level of insincerity and unreality about it. Today, however, we are not in the presence of the...

Seanad: Tributes to Deputy Head Usher of the Houses of the Oireachtas. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: One used to hear mention of the "real Taoiseach", this is the real Tony O'Reilly as far as I am concerned. The House will not be the same without him. He makes the clichés real. While we often hear tributes such as "Ní fheicfimid a leithéid ann arís," it is true on this occasion – I do not believe we will see his like again. While I am sure we will see someone excellent take his...

Seanad: Adjournment Matter. - Conservatory of Music and Drama. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: I welcome the Minister of State on this very appropriate day. As he probably knows, the budget for the Conservatory of Music and Drama on Chatham Street may or may not be approved by the Minister who has the capacity to vary it. I have received many letters from parents concerned about the continuing musical education of their children. This is a real problem.

Seanad: Adjournment Matter. - Conservatory of Music and Drama. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: I thank the Minister of State for his helpful reply and, in particular, for the remarks he made before reading the prepared script. I would be grateful if he would refer the record of this debate to the Minister for Education and Science with the reminder that, under the 1992 legislation, he is empowered to vary the budget and that he can direct the VEC. We have a large and increasing number...

Seanad: Adjournment Matter. - Conservatory of Music and Drama. (20 Mar 2003)

David Norris: Will the Minister of State also inquire whether the money, which is historically allocated to the provision of these services, is now being subsumed into the general Dublin Institute of Technology budget without provision for the services for which the money was meant? The Seanad adjourned at 5.20 p.m. until 10.30a.m. on Friday, 21 March 2003.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Mar 2003)

David Norris: I support Senator Mooney's comments on the dangers of drink. While the House has recently debated this issue, it is important to debate it again. Some years ago I raised in the House the problems arising from excessive alcohol consumption in terms of hygiene and danger to life, especially in the cities, but I was laughed out of court. We now realise how serious is the situation. A couple of...
