- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Dissolution of National Asset Management Agency: Discussion (21 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I apologise for missing some of Mr. McDonagh's evidence to the committee. Like Senator Casey, I was trying to follow from upstairs. If some of the questions relating to the housing tsar role were already answered, Mr. McDonagh has my apologies.
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Dissolution of National Asset Management Agency: Discussion (21 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I heard that at the start and appreciate Mr. McDonagh's candour on some of these matters. Is it Mr. McDonagh's contention that he had no discussion about potential salary when he allowed his name to go forward, regardless of where that might salary might end up, and that he did not have any discussion with anyone else inside the political system apart from the Minister for housing? Had he...
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Dissolution of National Asset Management Agency: Discussion (21 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: There was no discussion and Mr. McDonagh was not aware of what the salary might entail up until that point where he decided not to let his name go forward. When he discussed this with the Minister and allowed his name to go forward at that point, he was not aware of what the salary might entail.
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Dissolution of National Asset Management Agency: Discussion (21 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: It was a significant leap of faith for Mr. McDonagh to allow his name to go forward, not knowing what the outcome would be. I thank him for his evidence.
- Seanad: Ireland's Economic Outlook: Statements (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I welcome the Minister and apologise for not being here for his opening statement. Like many other Members here, I am juggling committee responsibilities with speaking in the House. In that regard, I know we will have an opportunity to speak to him at the committee later on today. I have had an opportunity to read his remarks and I just wanted to make a few remarks in response to them. ...
- Seanad: Economic Competitiveness: Statements (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I welcome the Minister. I am speed reading through the Minister's statement to try to respond to a few points on it. We had a similar conversation with the Minister for Finance this morning relating to the economic outlook statement and there is quite a lot of overlap in the issues that apply and a recognition that things do need to change and there are vulnerabilities. We were less than...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Developments in the Economy in the Year to Date: Minister for Finance (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I have two brief questions. I apologise for missing the Minister's opening statement but I was in the Chamber with his colleague, the Minister, Deputy Burke. With regard to restrictions on moving projects forward, the Minister talked about the unemployment levels being so-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Developments in the Economy in the Year to Date: Minister for Finance (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I am happy to let the questions go if the Cathaoirleach wants to bring the meeting to a conclusion.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Developments in the Economy in the Year to Date: Minister for Finance (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I had considered two questions but, given the vote that has just taken place, I will dispense with the second one. My question relates to what the Minister outlined in response to a previous question about the ability to ramp up investment in infrastructure. I believe it was Deputy McGreehan who asked the question. The Minister mentioned that there is a very low level of unemployment and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Developments in the Economy in the Year to Date: Minister for Finance (28 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: I recently had the opportunity to visit a factory in my area outside Newry and into south Armagh. It makes modular units for building. It is doing an enormous amount of trade south of the Border. Particularly considering the housing challenge, that approach allows for a higher level of productivity. It is a different way of building. People are preparing the units in a factory one mile...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee (27 May 2025)
Conor Murphy: Déanaim comhghairdeas leis an gCathaoirleach. I am looking forward to working with everybody here on the work that the committee has outlined. Technically, I am a returning member because I was a Member of Parliament and served on the committee many years ago. A number of important areas of ongoing work have been outlined which we look forward to getting our teeth into. This past...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: I express my condemnation of the racially motivated violent scenes that we have seen in Ballymena over the last couple of nights. It is very clear that rather than let the justice system run its course and deal with accusations of sexual assault and attempted rape, others have used them to stir up racial hatred in Ballymena and attack very vulnerable communities who are making a significant...
- Seanad: Enterprise Matters and Business Supports for SMEs: Motion (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: I welcome the motion and the amendment. It is timely that we begin to pursue the conversation about small and medium enterprises and microbusinesses, which, as others have said, make up the vast bulk of economic activity across the country and account for some 90% of employment across the State. We need to move quickly beyond the conversation to more affirmative action. There is, and has...
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: I thank Mr. Forde for the presentation. I know there is a lot to it and I am quite sure that many companies, particularly small- and medium-sized companies across the country, will welcome the fact of the reduction in regulation and the onerous burden of reporting on many of these matters. I apologise, as I have to go on to another engagement. I wanted to ask one question on a particular...
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: What would be the considered timeframe for transposing this?
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: It would not take effect until July 2027.
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: Okay. There is a question I was going to ask on that, and it might require some speculation on the witnesses' behalf. One of the consultees was the Central Bank, and on the issue of the requirement, an Oireachtas committee has had the opportunity to listen to its presentation on what it considers its duty to facilitate the sale of Israeli war bonds across the European Union. Is there an...
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: I refer to companies being required to report on due diligence with respect to human rights risks. This particular area of work it is involved in is the subject of matters in the International Court of Justice, with a number of other nations bringing cases against Israel. There are clear views from many nation states in the European Union that what is happening in Palestine is a genocide...
- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)
Conor Murphy: There is interest in due diligence with regard to some human rights aspects but not all. It appears to be a very European Union solution to this matter.
