Jackie Cahill: 169. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she will reverse the decision to close the Garda station in Templemore, County Tipperary, at night time, as it is placing the residents of Templemore and the surrounding areas at a greater risk of being victims of crime, and is a serious downgrading of the Garda presence in the area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Other Questions: Garda Reserve (28 Sep 2016)

Jackie Cahill: Deputy Eugene Murphy asked a very similar question and the Minister gave a detailed answer. I want to focus on the drop in the number of Garda reservists. From 2014 to this year, the number has dropped by 30% from 42 to 26, which is alarming. The Minister gave a detailed response on the future role of Garda reservists but I would like to focus on the drop in the number in our division.

Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: An Garda Síochána (8 Nov 2022)

Jackie Cahill: 305. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if solutions to the rising cost of running the swimming pool in Templemore Garda college have been explored with the Garda Commissioner, other than the closures of the pool, which will impact water safety for children in particular due to the inability to provide water safety courses locally, which has been the norm for over 50 years...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (27 Sep 2018)

Jackie Cahill: I have been approached by Garda officials as well to say that Commissioner Harris has introduced a ban on overtime to the end of the year. The programme for Government contained targets for resources to be put into fighting crime. Whether it is dealing with the incidence of drug-related and serious crime in urban areas, or crime in rural area where rural gangs have resurrected themselves,...

Rural Crime: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Jackie Cahill: ...a problem when one calls to a rural home and one is greeted from a window because people are fearful of opening their front door. This cannot be allowed to continue and solutions are available. Garda numbers must be increased and the force must be properly resourced. Strategic rural Garda stations must be reopened and community garda numbers must also be increased. The text alert...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (13 Oct 2022)

Jackie Cahill: I raise the issue of two sets of workers. I refer to civilian Garda staff, of whom there are 4,500, and those county council workers who work in water services. It is proposed that county council workers are to be switched over under the control of Irish Water and that civilian Garda staff be switched from the Civil Service into the public sector. Both groups of workers are greatly...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (8 Mar 2023)

Jackie Cahill: ...There have been a number of highly publicised incidents in the southern part of my constituency. The weekend before last, a constituent of mine noticed suspicious behaviour in her area and rang a Garda station that is supposed to be manned 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, her phone calls were not answered. We have no chief superintendent in our county. For a county the size of Tipperary...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Crime Prevention (12 Oct 2022)

Jackie Cahill: ..., Nenagh and Clonmel. I have had numerous complaints in the recent past about anti-social behaviour. Our battle against drugs is the greatest challenge facing modern society. I want to see more Garda resources being put in place to tackle this scourge on modern society. I am not here to criticise gardaí. They are doing the best they can with scarce resources. We need more...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (6 Nov 2018)

Jackie Cahill: ...are 78 communities in Tipperary eager to put in place CCTV systems but they are being hampered by the legislation. My understanding is that a statutory instrument was introduced which prevents the Garda from being the data protection and collection agency for the information gathered by the CCTV cameras. 3 o’clock We need all the weapons we can have at our disposal to fight...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Crime Prevention (12 Oct 2022)

Jackie Cahill: ...was a large public meeting in Moyle Rovers GAA club, which illustrates the growing public concern about the levels of crime and criminal activity. The first point I want to make relates to the Garda Commissioner's decision to remove a chief superintendent from Tipperary. We have always had a chief superintendent based in Thurles. The county is 140 km long, stretching from Portumna to...

Juvenile Crime: Motion [Private Members] (30 Jan 2019)

Jackie Cahill: This is a very important motion which Deputy O'Callaghan has brought forward. It is something that the public are extremely concerned about. The review examined 158,521 youth referrals relating to 57,386 individual children which were created on the Garda PULSE system...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (22 Sep 2022)

Jackie Cahill: I raise the Garda Commissioner's decision to remove a chief superintendent from Tipperary as part of its amalgamation with Clare. Unfortunately, we are seeing a very significant increase in crime in our county. In the last week or ten days, representatives from community groups in four towns - Ballina, Nenagh, Thurles and Cashel - have reported very significant increases in antisocial...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Garda Reform and Related Issues: Discussion (18 Sep 2019)

Jackie Cahill: ...feel that this reorganisation will put us at further disadvantage. We have serious black spots as regards personnel in the county in places like Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir and Roscrea. Templemore Garda station, which is a 24-hour Garda station, cannot be kept open because of lack of personnel. They are all issues about which people in the county have serious concerns. With this...

Illegal Drugs: Motion [Private Members] (5 Nov 2019)

Jackie Cahill: ...on an upward curve since. Commissioner Drew Harris attended the Tipperary JPC last Friday. He commented on the large number of drug seizures in my county of Tipperary in recent months, pointing to Garda successes. These are welcome but also point to the vulnerability of Tipperary, which has the largest motorway mileage of any county in the country. Coupled with over 5,000 km of national...

Other Questions: Garda Station Closures (17 May 2016)

Jackie Cahill: I appreciate the Tánaiste's answers. Hopefully, the increased Garda numbers projected under the programme for Government will impact on the ground and remove the fear with which people are living in rural areas. I look forward to monitoring the situation.
