Eamon Scanlon: I wish to share my time with Senator Brennan.
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Reference has been made to the attitude of the media to the war. I visited America last week and have viewed much of the coverage. The depiction of war is similar to what can be seen in a "Star Wars" film or a video game. The portrayal in the media is wrong, although I exclude RTE from that because in its "Prime Time" programme last night, it presented a broad overview of what was happening,...
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I welcome the Minister to the House. In getting the economy back on line it is important to be aware that the health of a nation has a direct impact on its economic health. When one falls ill one has a reasonable expectation of quality service and care. We have a multi-tiered health care system, public, private and marginalised. The latter have an income just a little over the eligibility...
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Deputy Ruairi Quinn two years ago made the startling admission that his failure as Minister for Finance to heed concerns expressed in regard to the future of our health services led to many of the difficulties which we now face.
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: It is not. I will quote what he said.
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Deputy Quinn stated: Just over six years ago, when there was a different Government in office, concerns about the future of the medical professions, particularly the nursing profession, were communicated to the Government and the Opposition. Certain predictions were made about the changes that would occur, especially with regard to the number of people coming into the nursing profession and...
- Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Many families who have children with special needs do not qualify for the medical card, a fact which is brought to my attention on a regular basis. I am sure other Senators and Deputies are made aware of it also. We must try to address that issue.
- Seanad: Adjournment Matter. - Hospital Services. (27 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I wish to share time with Senator Feighan.
- Seanad: Adjournment Matter. - Hospital Services. (27 Mar 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I raise this matter with the Minister of State because of the situation at the kidney dialysis unit at Sligo General Hospital, which facility is located in a house at the rear of the hospital. It is totally unsuitable and conditions are cramped. Until recently no advance could be made on the project. The nurses have now moved to the nursing school, as a result of which space has become...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Apr 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I support the call for a debate, at any time the Leader finds suitable, on the problems on our streets. The young man who was so viciously attacked last Saturday night on Grafton Street is a neighbour of mine. In Sligo, there was also a spate of violence over the weekend with cars burned out. Apparently thugs set fire to a car, which must have belonged to one of their own group. The car...
- Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: The Senator has not seen them.
- Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and congratulate him on his elevation. There is no doubt he is a hands-on Minister and is making improvements and changes. The policy of Fianna Fáil in Government is to maintain older people in dignity and independence at home in accordance with the wishes of older people themselves, as expressed in many research studies. The policy is to restore...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (7 May 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I support, for different reasons, the sentiments of Senator Higgins on the granting of a new licence to a new consortium for the north-west region. I know that the station has been very well run over the past 13 years and has been very successful. It has been one of the top local radio stations in the country. We know that the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland is an independent body and that...
- Seanad: Health Service: Statements. (13 May 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I concur with the two previous speakers. As a public representative and frequent visitor to hospitals, I am aware that the patients I visit are very satisfied with the treatment they receive. That is because of the work done by the doctors, nurses and other staff in the hospitals concerned.
- Seanad: Auctioneering Profession: Motion. (28 May 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I move amendment No.1: To delete all words after "Seanad Ãireann" and substitute the following: "ânotes that the Auctioneers and House Agents Acts 1947 to 1973 provide a regulatory framework for the manner in which auctioneers and house agents must act in the performance of their professional work; ârecognises that the regular review of the adequacy of regulatory legislation is...
- Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I wish to share my time with Senator Mansergh.
- Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: I welcome the Minister to the House. I thank the staff of the Standards in Public Office Commissioner for the work they have done. It was a difficult job and I can only imagine the difficulties they encountered. We need a complete overhaul of our electoral spending laws. We also need to increase spending limits. The system should be fully transparent and accountable. It needs to be clearer,...
- Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Taxpayers are paying enough. I do not believe they are prepared to pay for election expenses.
- Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: That is not fair. We take a great deal of stick from the Labour Party. However, I understand SIPTU makes a donation to every Labour Party candidate in a general election.
- Seanad: Election Expenses: Motion. (18 Jun 2003)
Eamon Scanlon: Nobody seems to know that fact. It does not seem to be public knowledge.
