Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Once it gets that treatment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I have a question on plastics. The witnesses have talked about 70% and 80% of plastics being collected. What tallying has been done in respect of the plastics coming in from Northern Ireland? Does the Irish Farm Film Producers Group know how much comes in?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I did not ask about a problem; I asked about a figure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: So, the witnesses cannot say, hand on heart, that the Irish Farm Film Producers Group has recycled 80% of the plastics used in Ireland? It could be 50%. I can tell the witnesses that vast amounts of plastics have been coming across the Border for years.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: So, as Senator Lombard stated earlier, we do not know the amount of plastics that is in the country in total. The Irish Farm Film Producers Group is working on figures that it has compiled with the industry. We are turning a blind eye to everything else. It is using those figures because it looks good for the organisation. However, in fact, in respect of recycling and the amount of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Irish Farm Film Producers Group is an approved operator. Does it have to tender to the Department every few years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I wish to make one final point. Mr. Moloney and a previous contributor both spoke about private operators. It was stated that they are in competition with the Irish Farm Film Producers Group. That is fine. For all the years when plastic was good and the private operators were sending plastic out of the country, the Irish Farm Film Producers Group was getting paid money to do nothing with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Hold on. My understanding-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: -----and correct me if I am wrong, is that when this scheme came out, farmers were to pay when they bought a roll of plastic. They were then to get a rebate when the plastic was brought to the centre. That never happened. Let us not be glorifying this as a great deal for farmers.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Farmers are paying at both ends. I ask Mr. Moloney and his board of directors to go back and have a rethink about where they are going. It is fine if the IFFPG gave money back but at the end of the day, the farmer is still paying. Farmers around the country are being shafted because they are paying at both ends in this scenario.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Farm Plastics Recycling: Discussion (18 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: May I say one thing in response? That figure of 40,000 farmers is about one third of the farmers in this country. I wonder what is happening with the rest of them.

Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 May 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: The traffic in Dublin nearly had me beaten. I welcome the Bill. There is one issue I would like the Minister of State to clarify. My office has been onto her's about it already. Will people who have been in nursing homes for three to five years so far be covered under the three-year rule straight away when the legislation comes in? Going by what she has said, they will have to be there...
