- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: The Minister is not in a position to say the State would have a majority on the board today. What kind of timeline are we looking at? As Deputy Shortall has pointed out, the same answers have been made available for the past two and a half years. Are we talking about concluding this arrangement in a matter of weeks, months or will it be years?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: Okay. The Minister has also said this morning that he and his Department are not actively looking at alternatives. I suspect one of the alternatives is Tallaght hospital. We accept he is not actively looking at this but does he have officials in his Department putting contingency plans in place in case this does not work out? Are the Minister and his Department working on a plan B?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: Okay. Has the Minister a timeline in mind? He has said he hopes to be in a position to bring a memo to Cabinet in a few weeks. Is there a period after which he will just have to say we have done our best but it is not working out and we will have to move to a plan B?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: I will put it to the Minister another way then. Two and a half years ago everyone would have been of the view this needed to be dealt with in a matter of months, not years. We are now two and a half years down that line. I respectfully suggest if this is not concluded by the end of this year, the Minister will have to look at a plan B and it will have to be actively considered.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: Okay. If I may have a quick word on vaccinations, is the Minister satisfied the supply line of vaccines coming into the country now is acceptable? Are there going to be any difficulties? Does the Minister foresee any challenges over the next few weeks? Clearly, the more people who are vaccinated, the fewer difficulties there will be with indoor dining.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: Are there any further developments in terms of buying unused vaccines from other countries? I know some have already been bought. Will the Minister confirm whether he is in a position to purchase more or if deals are almost concluded?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)
Martin Conway: I thank the Minister.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: Like other members, I express my heartfelt thanks to all of the witnesses and the people they represent for the work they have done. Regarding education, and compared to the North of Ireland, where the children of essential workers are going to school, this issue has not been addressed appropriately. What are Ms Ní Sheaghdha's thoughts on it? Does she believe as I do that the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: Perhaps Ms Ní Sheaghdha will give us her thoughts on that matter.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: We would not necessarily disagree with that analysis. When there were proposals to bring back special needs students, we saw the kickback from the unions. How did INMO members feel given that they are rolling up their sleeves risking their lives day in, day out?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: How many INMO members are out with Covid today?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: Given that INMO members are working extraordinary hours in terrible circumstances, has Ms Ní Sheaghdha noticed whether they are out with other illnesses, including being run down and mental health challenges? Has she seen an increase in the percentage of INMO members out with other illnesses this year by comparison with last year and other years?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: On the roll-out of vaccines, I would like Ms Ní Sheaghdha's thoughts on the mid-west, in particular. I represent Clare. Many INMO members in Clare were quite upset and annoyed about how the vaccine was rolled out in the mid-west by comparison with other regions. In the first allocation, 3,500 were allocated to the mid-west hospital group. In west Cork, including Kerry, 19,000...

Martin Conway: I will be only a minute.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Protection and Support for Covid-19 Front-line Workers: Discussion (9 Feb 2021)
Martin Conway: With respect, part of my time was taken up in answering the question from Deputy Bríd Smith. My question will be quick. Regarding moving forward, we are being told that there could be ebbs and flows with the roll-out of the vaccine. In respect of engagement with the HSE, and the sequencing document, is there confidence that proper protocols and structures are in place to deal with...

Martin Conway: I thank Ms Ní Sheaghdha. We must get representatives from the HSA to appear before this committee.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)
Martin Conway: Like everyone else in the country I want to start by sincerely thanking Dr. Holohan, Professor Butler, Dr Glynn and their teams for the outstanding work they have done on behalf of our country and our people. We are eternally grateful for their efforts and the leadership they have shown over the past 18 months. I was a little bit concerned about Dr. Holohan's statement on outbreaks in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)
Martin Conway: Does Dr. Holohan have any specific figures in terms of the number of people within the nursing home environment who have caught the disease? In terms of mortality, are there any specific figures available on the number of people we sadly lost?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)
Martin Conway: In terms of the booster programme Dr. Glynn spoke about, perhaps Professor Butler might go into a bit more detail on the plan to roll out the booster jabs to long-term care facilities and nursing homes.
