- Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Irish Compliance with International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Discussion (6 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I wish to make a brief observation on the issue of the victims of symphysiotomy. This issue has been recognised by the Oireachtas and we have received their written submissions, which will be incorporated in our report. I do not wish to make a political point but is it not the case that it is a political decision to move that forward with a view to compensation and so forth? Even though we...

- Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Irish Compliance with International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Discussion (6 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: You mention in your submission that you know of people as young as six years of age. It is a question of making ground on these issues. Twenty years ago I doubt that any Member of the Oireachtas or an Oireachtas committee would have engaged on this, so some progress has been made. Personally, I believe six years of age is a very tender young age. If the legislation could be brought...
- Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Irish Compliance with International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Discussion (6 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. It was a very worthwhile exercise. I feel I learned a lot today, as I am sure my colleagues did. I can assure the witnesses on behalf of the Seanad Public Consultation Committee, which was the brainchild of our Leader, Senator Maurice Cummins, when this Seanad was formed-----

Denis O'Donovan: That is true of this particular issue. We will prepare a report. The issue will not gather dust. We hope to present that report to Government by the end of May, well in advance of the July meeting in Geneva. I thank the witnesses again. We will reflect on what they have told us and will hopefully encompass some of the oral discussion with the written reports in a meaningful and...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I too would like to pay tribute to all those people who stood for election. It always gives us pause for thought when we see so many good councillors from different parties lose their seats, sometimes through no fault of their own, and on this occasion it seemed the tide was out for the Government parties. We on this side of the House are aware of how quickly the tide can go out at certain...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013: Second Stage (27 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I welcome the Minister to the House and congratulate her on her recent ministerial elevation. I wish her good luck in this difficult brief and hope she will have a successful tenure. It is a proud indication of the Seanad and those who have served here that she was the former Opposition leader in this House. It bodes well for those who serve here that there is a future after Seanad...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I rise to second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Darragh O'Brien on the medical cards issue. I ask the Leader to ascertain what is the current status of the proposed Fisheries (Amendment) Bill, which rows back somewhat on the fisheries Bill 2006 and with which I had a significant issue. I have been asking for more than 12 months for a debate on the fishing sector....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Guerin Report: Department of Justice and Equality (28 May 2014)
Denis O'Donovan: I seek direction from the Chairman. The Secretary General has given a statement that has been read into the record.. I perceive it to be most unusual that in each case where he either avoids an answer or gives an answer, there is a carefully prepared written script. Is this normal? If it is, it is a deviation from the normal rules. Why does he not answer viva voce, off his own bat?
