Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: This the problem though. The Government was to give us a piece of research that incorporated everything Professor FitzGerald is talking about to look at fuel poverty and to come back on that before it introduced a carbon tax. We worked hard at it for days trying to come up with a form of words that would put the onus on the Government to examine fuel poverty before the introduction....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: Our remit was ignored, I am afraid. I want to come back to the question of the role of the climate advisory council. One of its roles is to provide policy evaluation to Government based on the best available science. My question pertains to the advice that Professor FitzGerald provided to the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment on the future of gas and oil...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: No, the time was used up by the professor. My questions were really short.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: This is my final comment. In the context of this critical issue, scientists claim we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. There is a serious divergence between Professor FitzGerald's advice to Government and what the global scientists scream at us every day.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Special Educational Needs Staff (17 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: 4. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if funding for additional SNAs and improvements in the pay and conditions of SNAs will be provided for in 2020; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [42572/19]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Special Educational Needs Staff (17 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: My question follows on from the previous one to some extent. Will the Minister clarify if the additional funding announced for 1,000 SNAs includes the 800 extra SNAs that he announced in May or is it a further 1,000? Will this announcement of extra funding include an improvement of conditions, hours and precariousness under which these workers work? I also want to talk about the pay levels.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Special Educational Needs Staff (17 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: It is great that the Minister is announcing all these extra hours. The public would state that this is an amazing achievement and that an additional 1,000 on top of the previous 800 is what we need for the children, the parents and to take the pressure off the teachers and SNAs. The difficulty is that many SNAs still work under very precarious terms. They do not know until May what will be...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Special Educational Needs Staff (17 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: I want to emphasise it is not just about the future prospects and the possible improvements in training. On the day-to-day level, the experience of thousands of SNAs is the fragmentation and insecurity they experience. There is an idea that there is a 72 hour block in a given year where they are flexible to do what has to be done in the school, whether it is cleaning, washing, taking kids...

Acknowledgement and Apology to Women and Families affected by CervicalCheck Debacle: Statements (22 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: I am sharing time with Deputy Coppinger. Like others, I warmly welcome the 221 Plus group and their families to the Gallery today and we should all be extremely proud of the calibre of women in this country and the courage they have had in fighting this terrible battle and tragedy. One cannot help but notice there was a familiar ring to the apology although it was heartfelt from the...

An tOrd Gnó (Atógáil) - Order of Business (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)

Bríd Smith: I will be brief. I am sure that, like the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Deputy Bruton, the Taoiseach is aware that tomorrow the LNG project in Shannon, namely, the fracked gas project, is to be ratified on the list of projects of common interest, PCI, in the European Union. Sweden has pulled its LNG project from the list of PCIs. I appeal to the Taoiseach to...
