- Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31 (4 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of national importance, namely, to allow time for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to update the Dáil on when he was first asked to provide assistance in upgrading the Oughterard sewage treatment plant, which is still discharging virtually raw human sewage into Lough Corrib, causing...
- Order of Business (4 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: I support Deputy Kenny's request for more information. A debate on the issue in the House, of whatever duration that can be managed, would be appropriate. The matter I raised under Standing Order 31 referred to the problem in Galway. There is a need for an update on the situation and for us to learn from the mistakes of the past. The opportunity should not be missed to have that debate...
- Order of Business (4 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: The Criminal Justice Bill is being cited outside the House as important for various reasons, beyond its substance, including how it bears on our democracy and how that must be taken into account. I have come from a conference in the National Library organised by TASC, entitled Power to the People â Assessing Democracy in Ireland. This Bill was cited as an example of whether it is...
- Order of Business (4 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: To withold the temptation to use the guillotine means that democracy and accountability are not being further undermined and hopefully better legislation will flow from more reasoned debate.
- Order of Business (4 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: There is promised legislation in an area which may be pertinent to the meeting between the Taoiseach and Northern colleagues today. It relates to paedophiles or suspected paedophiles coming here from abroad who have no legal obligation to inform the Garda when applying for a job that puts them in contact with children and with no mechanism to monitor this. The promised legislation on the...

- Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31 (5 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss a matter of national importance, namely, the MacEntee report and related reports on the Dublin and Monaghan bombings; that this discussion takes place before the general election; and to call on the Tánaiste to indicate if the Garda SÃochána regrets its role in the failed investigation.
- Nordic Battle Group: Motion (5 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: Ba mhaith liom mo chuid ama a roinnt leis an Teachta Finian McGrath agus an Teachta à Snodaigh.
- Nordic Battle Group: Motion (5 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: This motion is important and it would be good to have more time to discuss the fundamental changes proposed in the way Ireland deals with the rest of the world, particularly from the point of view of military operations, international law and human rights. All parties would claim these as cornerstones of their approach to foreign relations. There are, however, differences between the...
- Housing Management Companies. (5 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: In light of a 64% increase in fees on one estate, I wish to draw the House's attention to three case studies which will illustrate the activities of property management companies. All will highlight the fact that such companies are protected by the Government while they rip people off. An estimated 8% of people in Ireland now live in properties managed by companies and the proportion is...
- Housing Management Companies. (5 Apr 2007)
Trevor Sargent: I am not surprised at that anger. The Government allows the law to favour management companies. There is an embargo on local authority recruitment which often means it is not possible for the council to take into charge because it does not have the staff. The corporate enforcement agency does not have the resources.
