Shane Ross: There will be no megaphone diplomacy here today.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue (7 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: The Tánaiste, Deputy Gilmore, chose not to use that line when he was making his remarks.

Access to Credit: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: This motion is particularly appropriate, because it is proposed at a time when the banking landscape is moving very quickly. Two recent events highlight the need to look at the Government's lack of vision for the banking sector, and the lack of success it has in moving nimbly within that context. The most significant events which have happened in banking recently have occurred in the last...

Access to Credit: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: Hear, hear.

EU-IMF Programme: Statements (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: I recognise that this is a very important decision made by the Government but I regret that it has been reduced to the level of political bravado, the fact that the Dáil has been called at such short notice and that there is no proper debate on this. The Taoiseach's speech was missing something, which means that neither I nor anybody else in this House can judge properly whether this is...

EU-IMF Programme: Statements (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: To present this, as the Tánaiste did, as an historic day is not an honest opinion. We are not restoring our sovereignty today. We are not regaining our sovereignty. We are being treated to a political theatre by the Government which is a camouflage. One can tell the people today that there will be a change in policy but there will not be one. Austerity will continue. The imposition...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: On the work programme, can we ask representatives of the Central Bank to come in again? There have been at least three extremely high profile events in which there has been Central Bank intervention. One is the finding of the €70 million gap in Royal & Sun Alliance which is without a proper explanation at this stage. While the Central Bank's involvement is not clear, we need...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: I thank the Chairman for his response. I would like us to invite the Governor or the new regulator who is pretty much invisible - it would be nice to make him visible. However, I am talking about something immediate; I am not talking about negotiating with them about coming in. If the committee is to be relevant, we should be seen to respond to these issues immediately. We do not want the...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: Will the clerk specifically ask that we have a meeting in the next week?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: I thank the Chairman.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: Are representatives of the Central Bank coming in on that day? I imagine we could dump the National Gallery of Ireland for the Central Bank.

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General
Chapter 22 - Eligibility for Medical Cards
(14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: With your permission, Chairman, I will give way to comrade Deputy Dowds because he is in a hurry to go to the Chamber.

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General
Chapter 22 - Eligibility for Medical Cards
(14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: I was absent for much of the meeting. I apologise if my questions have already been asked by other members. I was struck with the extraordinary increase of 74% since 2005. The HSE marched everyone up to the top of the hill and gave them these cards and now it is telling them that the number of medical cards must be reduced. Is that a difficult decision for the HSE?

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General
Chapter 22 - Eligibility for Medical Cards
(14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: Is it not the case that this will reduce the number?

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General
Chapter 22 - Eligibility for Medical Cards
(14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: I understand that point. The figure of 74% is staggering. I apologise if Mr. O'Brien has answered this question earlier. What percentage of applications are refused?

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General
Chapter 22 - Eligibility for Medical Cards
(14 Nov 2013)

Shane Ross: That information is extremely important. Can the witnesses provide any idea?

Shane Ross: Between 2% and 3% only are refused?

Public Accounts Committee: 2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General

Shane Ross: Is that on renewal or on first application?
