John Dardis: On Senator Wilson's comments about the Minister for Finance—

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: Senator Wilson made a point about the Minister for Finance coming here to talk about decentralisation. I am sure the Minister for Finance will be here to discuss the budget.

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: This side of the House will accept the most vigorous political charges against the Minister, but not an imputation that he misled the Houses.

Seanad: Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: That depends on the year.

Seanad: Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. This is important and essential legislation. I am pleased its passage is being facilitated through this House and I hope it will be facilitated through the other House so that it will quickly become law because it is required. It will remove the uncertainty regarding the issue of costs, which arose when Mr. Justice Flood stepped down from the...

Seanad: Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) (Amendment) Bill, 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: I have a certain sympathy with what Senator Terry is suggesting. I ask the Minister to look at these amendments before the Bill is presented in the Dáil. There may be merit in what is being said and this would be a way around the impasse. An amendment in the Dáil would necessitate bringing the Bill back to the Seanad, but that would only be a matter of a few minutes.

Seanad: Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) (Amendment) Bill, 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: He sometimes makes mistakes.

Seanad: Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) (Amendment) Bill, 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Dec 2003)

John Dardis: Section 2(1A)(b), states that the chairman of the tribunal shall "have regard to any report of the tribunal relating to its proceedings in the period before his or her appointment". I would have thought the chairman of the tribunal would have had regard to such a report without it being specified in the legislation. I understand the cost aspect but I do not understand why this needs to be...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: On behalf of the Progressive Democrats, I wish to be associated with the other groups in the House in extending our sympathy to the wife and family of the late Pat Joe Reynolds. He had a remarkable long life of public service to the State and to the people of Leitrim. His family's continuing service to the State since its foundation is very noteworthy, particularly in the circumstances of his...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: On the last point, without reopening the debate, perhaps I might say that it was done without debate by agreement. I am confident the commission was established under statute and that the statutory provisions relating to its establishment were complied with in full.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: It is important the Seanad takes cognisance of the fact that Ireland holds the Presidency of the European Union and I wish the Taoiseach and the Government well in that onerous task as did the leader of the Opposition in the Dáil. This is the appropriate House in which to debate some of the issues arising from the comprehensive programme for the Irish Presidency. The Seanad is well equipped...

Seanad: Recognition of the Irish Language: Motion. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: Tá áthas mór ag an Pháirtí Daonlathach an tairscint seo a mholadh. Is trua liom nach mbeidh mé in ann oráid iomlán a dhéanamh as Gaeilge. I am in the same position as Senator McHugh. Having spent several years learning Irish in school and having spent several summers in Corca Dhuibhne — Senator O'Toole will know Brú na Gráige in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh — I still have a...

Seanad: Recognition of the Irish Language: Motion. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: Sin an duine a fuair an córas aistriúcháin istigh anseo.

Seanad: Recognition of the Irish Language: Motion. (21 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: We will drink to that.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Jan 2004)

John Dardis: I echo the remarks of Senator Finucane about avian influenza. It is essential that not just poultry meat but all meats coming into the EU, especially into Ireland, should have their countries of origin declared on them. It seems to be the case that meat brought into the EU for processing can be regarded as European Union meat. However, this meat may have come from countries in which hormones...
