Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The Senator was everywhere.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Senator Leyden's intervention was another attempt at a phoney spat regarding the Vatican. He was an absolute holy show. I am as big a supporter as anyone in this Chamber or in the other House of having an embassy to the Vatican in Rome. However, it should be remembered that in this case, there is no diminution whatsoever of ambassadorial service. The previous ambassador retired but Mr....

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: -----and there is no breakdown whatsoever in diplomatic relations. Mr. David Cooney is a superb diplomat and a former ambassador in London where he did a superb job. He and Archbishop Browne, the nuncio-----

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Of course I am. Mr. Cooney and the new papal nuncio, Archbishop Browne, are doing a wonderful job. I believe they will achieve something I mentioned before and which Senator Healy Eames mentioned today. One would hope the Vatican would see its way to allowing a small country in economic difficulties to have two ambassadors and two embassies work within the one building.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: There is no reason this should not be possible. The Members opposite should be patient.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I have a question and it is very simple. We know there are no consular services nor trade promotion with regard to the Vatican. We know what has happened. There is no need for the Senator to be jumping up and down like a jackass.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I am sure the Leader will heartily concur with what I am saying.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: With respect, colleagues and friends opposite are overly labouring the matter of the closure of the Vatican embassy.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: There was no withdrawal of an ambassador, no breakdown in diplomatic relations and a review of the decision is under way. We should be patient and avoid getting carried away. Senators opposite know well what is happening.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I wish to apologise to the Cathaoirleach. Yesterday, unfortunately, I used an inappropriate word, which I did not intend to do. I apologise for that slip of the tongue. I clearly meant to say "jack in the box".

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: There is no withdrawal.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(Political Funding) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: We are dealing with amendment No. 14. That is the only amendment before the House.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(Political Funding) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (15 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The Senator can refer to amendment No. 28 now because it is one of a group of amendments under discussion. However, the amendment cannot be moved at this point.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I join Senator Norris in welcoming the appointment of Archbishop Charles Brown as the new nuncio to Ireland. This appointment shows the importance of this country to the Vatican. This man served with the then Cardinal Ratzinger for ten years in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and as was stated this morning on the radio he has worked very closely with the pontiff. All of...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Feb 2012)

Paul Coghlan: -----more fruitful diplomatic relations and this is very good. He will be dean of the diplomatic corps in Ireland which indicates the very long established relationship. The diplomatic mission dates from 1929 and all of this indicates its importance. Some intemperate language was used in the House yesterday and it did not help the situation. Perhaps on mature reflection it should be...
