Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of the Operation of the Medical Card Scheme: Irish Dental Association (8 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: In the first instance, I am pleased to hear that the vast majority of dentists and dental nurses have been vaccinated. One hundred and thirty is not an insignificant number, so that must be welcomed as well.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of the Operation of the Medical Card Scheme: Irish Dental Association (8 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: In terms of when there is a significant roll-out, we are talking about 1.7 million doses of vaccine in the month of June. Are any protocols or agreements in place with the HSE for large numbers of the 3,000 members to be available at weekends? Clearly, there are not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of the Operation of the Medical Card Scheme: Irish Dental Association (8 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I think Mr. Hourihan got the gist of my question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of the Operation of the Medical Card Scheme: Irish Dental Association (8 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: That is good to hear. I thank the witnesses.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I endorse Deputy Cullinane's proposal in the first instance. Also, since NIAC and, in particular, the HSE are coming in, I am very concerned about the roll-out of the HPV vaccine. We need to get an update on that as well and on whether there is any proposal to have a catch-up programme, given the fact that schools have been closed now for a significant period of the past 12 months. I have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: Hang on a second. The matter was raised and I was quite entitled to come in as well, so I resent that comment.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I wish to thank Dr. Glynn, Professor Nolan and their backup and support teams for they great work they have done over the last 12 months or more, at this stage. Many of the questions I would have asked have already been asked and I do not intend to go back over that ground. However, there is a concern now with nursing homes, in the sense that they received their first dose in January,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: That is good news.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: Would Dr. Glynn share my concern if people are travelling across the country to get vaccinated?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: It is a lot more common than one might think. Clearly, hospitality is going to open over the summer, possibly with outside dining as happened last year. Obviously, there will be protocols in place and recommendations and so on. This is work that NPHET should be engaged on at present because regardless of whether hospitality reopens in May or June for outside dining, we all hope it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on the Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic: National Public Health Emergency Team (13 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I am sorry.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I agree with the Minister of State, Senator Hackett, on the proposal of a public bank. It has worked very well in Germany, which is a European colleague country of ours, and should be looked at. I am speaking today because coming from County Clare, which is heavily dependent on tourism, I am concerned that we are not necessarily properly prepared. A lot of work can be done in advance of...

Seanad: Criminal Procedure Bill 2021: Second Stage (19 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister, Deputy McEntee, to the House. The Criminal Procedure Bill 2021 is progressive legislation in terms of modernising our criminal justice procedures. It is very welcome that, within a year of being in office, the Minister has brought before Members recommendations made in numerous reports over the years, most recently in the O'Malley report. It is appropriate that we...

Seanad: Water Quality: Motion (19 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I commend my county colleague and friend, Senator Garvey, on tabling one of the most substantial Private Members' motions I have seen. It is very important. I recall when investment was planned a long number of years ago when I started in the House, and the Irish Water model was proposed. People protested in the streets. Paying for water is...

Seanad: Water Quality: Motion (19 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: The investment of billions of euro that will be required will have to be borrowed and invested in these villages. We will see a dividend and a payback in due course from properly managed economic development within villages.

Seanad: Water Quality: Motion (19 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: At 10.30 a.m. next Friday.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Roll-out: Update (20 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: I thank Dr. Henry, Professor Butler and their teams for the amazing work they have been doing on behalf of our country over the past 12 months. Of the 105,000 in cohort 1, how many now have been fully vaccinated with the first and second jab?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Roll-out: Update (20 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: Of the 482,387 people in cohort 3, how many have received their first jab?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Roll-out: Update (20 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: This still involves 25,000 people in the over-70s group who have not received their first jab yet. Is there any regional breakdown of this? I am getting information that in some urban areas, such as Kildare, people have not even got appointments yet. Is there a situation where the over-70s in large populated towns are still waiting, whereas in rural areas they have received their first jab?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Roll-out: Update (20 Apr 2021)

Martin Conway: Is there a dedicated telephone line for the over-70s? I know they are told to go to their GPs but there are always exceptions in these situations. Is there a phone line run by the HSE which people can ring in order to get information if they are concerned that they are not getting their appointment? If there is not, will one be set up? There should be in my view.
